67 Barracuda Speedometer Questions

-
I have use a drill or a dremel tool and an old speedo cable to check them before. Not a perfect test, but you can get an idea of how much it bounces. I you use just the cable center ( I cut it off shorter) that removes the bad cable possibility from the test. One of those flex cables from a dremel tool Aldo works.

Does anyone know if a 67 Plymouth Barracuda Rallye Dash came with a 150 MPH speedometer with a trip odometer? If so, does anyone have a part number for 150 MPH Rallye dash speedometer with trip odometer. (Takes the screw on speedometer cable)
If this was not at valid option what is the part number for 67 Plymouth Barracuda Rallye Dash 120 MPH speedometer with trip odometer?

I am going to place a wanted ad for a 67 speedometer and need information before placing this ad.
PS I have what I believe is a 68 or later one part number 2927719. Push on speedometer cable.

What you have is a Duster rallye dash speedo, which are harder to come by than the Barracuda one. The numbers on the Duster speedo are horizontally oriented, the Barracuda numbers follow the circle around.

The date code on the speedo in post 1 is Nov 17, 1969. So yes, 1970 340 Duster or Swinger.

That number orientation was available in 1969 Barracudas. Some say also on late build '68s, but I've never seen one. Mine is a June '68 build that has the early number orientation.

A late speedo can be made to look like an early one with a decal from Mr. Heaterbox. In a car with the lens over it, it would take a sharp eye to tell the difference. Coupled with the later cable, a '67 can appear correct without having to chase down the scarce, one-year-only speedo.

1969 dealer literature from Hamtramck-Historical.

If you have a bad speedometer, take it apart. You will find plastic gears in the trio clock section. Point out to your customer that the 10ths wheel is in the trip clock. It's work load increases with every decade/digit/wheel it must turn. Thus the trip clock shortens the life of the instrument. Even without the trip clock, good 60 year old clocks are not common.
When sellers offer a used speedometer they place it on a table to photograph. The instruments weight was resting on the input. Take notice of how far this pressure lifts the needle. That is your evidence of how much wear is in the instrument. When it was new that small bias force would not lift the needle at all. If I see more than 5 mph lift I keep on shopping.
If your customer absolutely must have 150 mph plus trip, inform him that restoration of that instrument may cost 200+US
He is not worried about cost...

In all 3 years of 2nd gen cuda speedo #'s are oriented differently, so the one you mentioned could be for a 69 cuda.
With the date code @S'cuder mentioned i bet they continued the 69 design until the end of rally dashes.

Just a FYI for anyone considering a sticker to alter or renew the screen appearance, those things are the most difficult to apply. The needle/pointer must be removed. While the instrument is in the panel a triangle shaped flag like portion opposite the limb cannot be seen. What is more hidden is a dab of white epoxy like material on the underside of that flag. It is for counter balance. Bend the flag portion just barely and that stuff they used will fall off. So don't grab that needle with your fingers. I think the tool is actually called hemostat while many of us call it a roach clip. Use that tool underneath the screen to remove the needle from its post. There's only a weak interference fit there. Needle was pushed on. No threads.
