dont know much about the engine on this project.
the timing tab is on the pass side but when we throw a light on it the damper notch seems like its happy over on the driver side.
we found #1 at compression and even put in a new distributer but it wont even run over near the timing tab.
ive heard that some people put the newer cover on an older motor and it is over on the driver side.
someone before made their own mark on the balancer with a paint pen in the area that seems to work .
i can get the ar to idle and rev very nice just sitting there but on a drive its got absolutely no power at all.
we put a paperclip on the holley 600 to see if it is opening and it looks like it isnt.
we have a 750 with manual secondaries and got it idling fine.
we went for a spin and it still has no power at all and were sure this time they are opening.
i timed it by advancing it till it started to ping on acceleration and then backed off a little.
any ideas on what to try next?
it has new plugs wires dist voltage reg and battery

You said you found TDC on the compression stroke (with a piston stop, I assume) of #1, but where was the timing mark on the balancer at that point?
At TDC, mark the balancer at the "0" mark on your balancer. That is your new timing mark.
Still no power? Are you 100% sure your distributor isn't 180* off? It will run but will have zero power.
Edit:
Like 4spdragtop says, mark the balancer all the way across the face to make sur the outer ring isn't slipping.

Try this.

Put your timing light on cyl #1.

Then point your timing light on the pass side of the damper. If you see the mark at about the 10:00 position you need a bolt on 67 273 timing marker.

Or do as described and make a mark on the driver's side on the balancer when the engine is at TDC compression.

Quick explanation...

Up thru 1969 SBs the timing marker was on the passenger side and the cast iron water pump inlet was on the driver's side.

From 1970 up SBs the timing marker was on the drivers side and the aluminum water pump inlet was on the passenger side.

I have a 70 up timing cover and the 67 marker so I have to locations to check timing. On the 67 marker I use cyl #1, on the 70 up marker I use another cyl, u don't recall which, experimentation will show which one.

Now here's the kicker...

The 69 and older dampers timing mark is not 90, 180 or 270 out from the 70 up damper is like 80 (I don't know the actual amount off the top of my head) out so it will not line up with the 70 up covers timing mark. So if you want to use the drivers side 70 up marker with a 69 and older damper you must remark the damper. Same for 70 up damper and 69 older marker.
