I have searched this forum and can't seem to find the information I am trying to find. My project is a 71 Dart that I am adding the 70 model twin scoops to the hood. I have a factory hood from a 70 Dart that already has the holes/cutouts in place. Earlier searching that I have done lead me to believe that the "inserts" that went into the large holes were shaped like an inverted tophat that was then attached with 4 sheet metal screws in each scoop. This is borne out by the fact that there are four small holes in the hood where the inserts were previously located. However, all I can find in catalogs now are what amounts to a big grommet that is referred to as sealing the hood to the snorkel air cleaner. What I have is a large, circular air filter housing with dual oblong openings under where the scoops would dump. My understanding is that the filter housing I have is correct for the 70 model year configuration. What is the correct part for the opening in the hood? Can anyone with a factory 70 hood please provide pix of the inserts and the corresponding air cleaner housing? Thanks in advance!

Jim

70 A body were non functional if you are envisioning a B body type induction set up ,they never had it. The 70-71 Black air cleaner with the 340 pie tin is correct as you see it in pics. No duct work to the scoops

Here are pics of a demon hood I just did and it has the factory water diffusers

? Are you sure about that.
Yes Ive never seen one with B body style duct on a 340 dual scoop car Im referring to the seal that seals the air cleaner to the scoops when hood is closed. Im not referring to home grown fabs Im referring to how they came factory. I suppose my previous "non functional" comment may be confusing yes on A body they were functional for letting cold air in the engine bay but not functional as a ram air etc.

Non functional ? Please explain.

As A ram air system they are non functional as there is no duct from the scoop to the air cleaner as a hole in the hood, yes they are functional. But you could just bolt them to a flat hood and do the same thing but id be concerned about air pressure ripping the scoops off with no hole in the hood . In short they are for looks on the a body. Remember the 69 Dart had hood bulges no openings. I m just saying they serve no purpose for performance. But thats just my $.02

Here is a hood we just did. The holes are 4 inches in diameter and are put in with a sheet metal punch , Not a Hole saw. Unless you want a hole that is not accurate and will cut the rubber water diffusers. Remember the thick side of the diffusers up. They are not air seal but are to prevent rain water from running in.

The holes are cold air inlets.

Makes no sense to say the 70 340 hood scoops are non functional. The holes dump directly into the 2 holes in the 340 air cleaner. I have seen non functioning hoods, however this is not one of them. I would even go as far to say, they let hot air out, when idling.100% the hood scoops are functional.

all im sayin is you arent gaining .5 hp switching your 318 swinger to a scoop hood off a 340 car :poke:

Back to regularly scheduled programming
This is how the hood should look, and these are the correct inserts, which are available from several vendors.

What @Dartswinger70 is saying, is they are not functional to the extent the '69 B body ramcharger setup was. Those had a actual air box assembly to direct air into the air cleaner. The A body version does allow SOME outside air in, but the engine is still injesting hot underhood air as well. It's a shame Chrysler didn't develop a "N96" package for the 70 Darts and 71 demons. It would have been totally cool

There actually was a pair of plastic inserts that were developed at Chrysler that stuck in the oval openings in the air cleaner and were meant to slip into the grommets when the hood was shut, but it never worked well so they never offered them. I saw a set at the WPC swap meet decades ago...

Thanks OldManMopar, this is what I was looking for. After spending days doing the bodywork on the hood, I left the holes there, thinking that they were needed for the water diverters. The spacing (4 of them around each hole) is damn near perfect. I doubt that the type shown in your pix won't cover the holes. Dammit!

Where did the Mopar Muscle yellow 340 Dart engine compartment picture come from Johnny Dart???

I even make this 4 1/8 in hole for my duster twister hoods...I drill it with a 4" hole saw bit...can't afford punch out dies

Like @Oldmanmopar , my 70 Swinger is the same.

Sorry I dont have a more closeup shot of the diverters, but they are the same, and make sure the thicker part is "up" into the scoop. Zoom in and you will see.

in my experience, get your repop grommets from DMT - many of the others are too small, flop around, I even lost one once!

And the tall side goes up to keep water from sheeting into the hole.

I wish someone would do the work to produce the aforementioned pieces to insert in the air cleaner so the hood would close down on them

At the Nats in the early 2000s I saw a set up made from a damaged Superbee hood structure - they narrowed it and made a functional Ramcharger hood. I also saw one in a Mopar magazine where someone moved the scoops farther away from each other so that a Superbee structure fit right in, but IMHO the wider spacing of the scoops didn't look right.
