have a 71 demon with 8 3/4 and am contemplating swapping to bbp axles 5-4.5 to match the front disc conversion but have a few questions, 1) I want to keep it cheap, using Yukon axles however if I do can I retain the drum brakes that are on there now? and if there is someone that offers drums to drop on rather than drilling the originals. Is this even possible since I have read numerous posts but all state replacing the backing plates and linings etc to allow this swap. 2) are the Green Bearings suitable for street driver use 3) does the center section have to be removed to access the spacer block when replacing the axles? Doing all of this to remove wheel spacers and air shocks to allow better wheel to fender clearance on the rear and restore some ride quality.

Thanks for your time,

DoctorDiff is your best bet for the axles, just go with standard LBP axles and replace the brakes with the 10x2.5” LBP brakes (backing plates have to be swapped, can’t use the SBP stuff).

1- if you keep the small bolt pattern axle flange offset but use the large bolt pattern you have to use small bolt pattern drums and have them re-drilled. There is no source to buy small bolt pattern dimension drums (10x1.75) with a large bolt pattern, you need to buy the SBP drums and have them re-drilled. And you’re forever stuck with trying to source brake parts for the SBP 10x1.75” brakes, they have fallen in and out of production in the past.

2- the green bearings were redesigned quite awhile ago, they are suitable for street use if installed properly. Again, you can talk to DoctorDiff about that

3- possibly. In a lot of cases the center block will have sheared its pin and you can fish the ends of the block out with a magnet. If not you may have to pull the 3rd member.

We purchased DrDiff axles LBP,now i'm shopping for backing plates and have a line on some 1971 charger plates, but I see they came with 10 or 11 inch brakes, will either function with new drums and shoes as the seller says they are no return and I wouldn't see why either set wouldn't work based on the car they supposedly came off, se mentioned something about some chryslers that had a weird offset and assured me these didn't have that offset and would probably work. Can anyone say for sure that either the 10's or 11's are suitable? Thanks,

Either should work, the 10’s should be 10x2.5”. The 11’s should be 11x2.5”, and the drums and shoes are available. 11” LBP rear brakes also came in 11x2” and 11x3” varieties, but neither of those should have come off a ‘71 charger. At least not originally. The drums and shoes for those sizes are harder to find.

thanks, I'll be a Mopar expert when this project is over.

Make sure 11 inch drums fit in your wheels - just drop a drum inside the back of a wheel. Make sure you have enough room around the drum inside the wheel to let the brakes cool.
