So my 73 Scamp has a 72 340, with an edelbrock 2176 intake. I have a stock thermoquad I’m going to install but I need a stock choke. All the reference I find shows the style with the bathtub and gasket, but both my aftermarket Edelbrock and my 72 factory cast iron 340 intake have the open well. I need the correct factory choke that works with this well and a stock TQ.

Rock Auto is where I found mine. But about 5 years ago. They have electric assist along with the thermostatic coil.
It has a plate on the side for the open well. I also found they had the same without the electric assist. There is also a resistor that mounts to the manifold before that connects to the coil plug.
Maybe they are still available.

What car did you order it for? Looking up a 72 Duster with a 340 yields no choke options.

Look for a Dodge Diplomat 318 or 360 in the late 70's- 1980's vintage. OR a Ram truck. You may have to put in different years to find what you are looking for. I was converting a 88 Ram that had a Quadrajet carb. 1985 Chrysler started using them as Carter went out of business.I also had to change the manifold as the Quadrajet used a electric choke,no well.
Searching may take awhile but you will find it.
The one I bought the one without a electrical connection. I may have the part # if you are ok with a day's wait.
I have to go to my shop to find it.

That intake is a 73 intake. The 71-72 340 intake both used the open well with the cup and gasket-a nicer looking choke in my opinion. Then in 73-like your intake used a choke without electric assist, then 74 went with same choke type with the electric assist. All of these chokes are available on Ebay, many as NOS Mopar. Just type in Thermoquad chokes and look for the one that doesn't have a wire on it. There are many that are available.

They are available on Ebay. Some NOS Carter out of box for 26.95 and free shipping. Auction number 184924879113. And NOS Carter in the Carter box for 69.95 and free shipping. Auction number 181950832813. Both part numbers 170-1409

This is what I got from Rock Auto= GP Sorensen,#779-682
Non electric choke thermostat 1972-1984. Hope this helps.

Youngblood, did you ever find a suitable choke thermostat for your application? I am in the exact same position, I have a manifold that looks exactly like your photo and haven't come up with a source either. If someone has a car with the same manifold, can you please post a picture so I at least know what I am looking for? Thanks!

Although there are several versions for the various applications, most can be interchanged. Most choke thermostats were electric assist, but a few applications were not and are listed in the foregoing list.

The following image shows a electric assist choke thermostat for a Thermo-Quad. The image is of the 1973-1976 version with the smaller red 3/16" connector. Later versions had a black 1/4" connector.

Non-electric assist chokes are similar without the heater coil and wire.

The choke electric control applies voltage to the choke thermostat electric assist based on ambient temperature and time. Four versions were produced.
  • Chrysler 3656730, 3698357: 1973-1976 single stage.
  • Chrysler 3755750, 3755770, Auto-Tune A32-901: 1974-1976 dual stage.
  • Chrysler 4049799: 1977-1984 single stage.
  • Chrysler 4049777, 4091034, Auto-Tune A32-903: 1977-1984 dual stage.
The following two images show the early and late style choke electric control. Both are dual stage. Single stage units are similar without the added resistor:

The 1971 - 1972 Thermo-Quad choke is the style that uses an enclosed well in the manifold, and is non-electric assist. Carter and Chrysler part numbers for this choke are as follows:
  • Carter 170-148. Chrysler 3512875, Filko 31-82:
    4972,4973,6138,6139,6144

The "bathtub" (stainless steel cup + gasket) was on factory '70-'72 intakes. Up to '69 and '73-up factory manifolds, plus all aftermarket ones I'm aware of, have the integral-well type casting.

My preferred way forward has long been a SuperChoke electric choke kit. They behave better than most of the factory setups, and are adjustable (unlike the '73-up factory choke thermostats). It looks like you'd use a CU-1243 on the intake pictured above.

Thanks to those who replied, you make this forum great! When I bought my project, I was told the engine was a 72 model year unit, it looks like maybe a late 72 model year, or I got bad information. Either way, the engine is going into a 71 and I don't really want to fool with the addition of the electric components of the choke. The non-electric later model thermostat is what I need. I found one on-line and have placed an order. One more missing item I can cross off the list! Vaanth, that link to your Carter information was awesome, that's a whole lotta work there! Thanks again to you all!
