Had a bad leak from the front of my 727, so I pulled the pump out to reseal it, and the little finger clip on one of these rings is broken. There’s two that are on the back side of the pump that goes into the drum. Any idea where I can find them? I may have to seal them out of my other 727 for now.

Also, any way to tell if a pump is going bad? Seems of a seal starts leaking usually there’s some other cause to the problem. The transmission was fresh in 3/2023, so it shouldn’t been worn much.

I’d like to just do a pump reseal kit, but don’t want to be doing this job again in a week.

I agree with finding a transmission shop, I find if you’re decent they will dig through there stash and come up with the parts you need. There’s not much call for rebuilding automatics from the sixty’s so there usually willing to help…

Cobra transmission shows those sealing rings.
Probably best to buy 2 rings just in case.
They show two different rings used on the 727.
IPNG-22550 for 62-70 year and IPNG- 22550N-SP for 71- 99 year.

What year is your 727?

I would rather buy known new ones instead of some that were kicking around in a drawer of extras, they do break and the labor is not fun to do this job again. LOL

I just stole a ring from my other 727.

Looks like the babbitt bearing the converter rides on was abnormally scuffed, so I ordered a dimpled bronze bushing instead. Guessing that could have caused enough play to cause a seal leak. The pump gears look and measure fine.

If you have a steel front drum, I would run Teflon rings on the reaction shaft support (stator). As far as a leak, check the bushing in the front pump and replace it with a good babbit bushing.

I’ll have to get some Teflon rings for the next rebuild. I think I’ll just get a book and rebuild my own 727s from now on. This one was fresh from the shop 3/2023, and doesn’t have that many passes on it.
It had a Babbitt bearing that was getting worn which I’m guessing is what caused the leak. I’m putting a bronze one in like my old transmission that lasted over a decade.

Doing it with a book on your own is the way to go. Then you know exactly what is done and can go racing with confidence.

There’s only one transmission shop in town, and the owners kid robbed parts off a truck I had in storage, so safe to say him and I don’t get along.

In the future if you call A&A transmission or Andrew’s Racing Trans, they have rebuild kits readily available.

I’ll do that. I have been bringing mine to Idaho to get rebuilt which is a pain and expensive.

Well she’s still F’d. Hitting the transbrake or putting it in reverse (pro brake valve body) makes it pour out pretty bad. It’s not overfull and definitely not overheated.

You may want to check the converter for a crack.
Wouldn’t be surprised. Wouldn’t be the first or even second junk part from Coan. I’m putting the whole car on the back burner for now. Sucks since I’m several rounds in first place for Super Pro class at our local track, but the ambition to pull that damn thing out again isn’t there.

Ugh, I’m sorry to hear that. I understand that feeling completely. Give it a day or two and you may get the itch.

I hate that you’re right. Pulled it out again, and I have a suspicion this Coan converter isn’t welded adequately and is leaking.
