OK Guys........

I have the car (Dart Sport) in the garage, and I'm ready to tackle the tailshaft bearing problem if I can get some clear step by step directions on it.......

I posted a while back that the bearing sounds like it's rattling pretty bad in there...the driveshaft was previously out of balance and sticking out too far at the tail....caused some problems I think......There's a bearing and bushing in there, correct? I think they're really boogered up...........

It really rattles now at a dead cruise...pressure on or off the throttle loads it, and it quiets down..........but it's getting worse. (the rattles are coming from inside the tailshaft housing, under the hump).

I've been told that I can change this myself.........Can you guys give me a step by step on just what to do with this thing? :read2:

Hi Tom, that's a fairly easy job to do in the car. You'll need to remove the trans. cross member to access the snap-ring cover. The cover is help on by two phillips screws. Remove the 9/16" head bolts holding the tailshaft to the transmission case, and with your snap ring pliers, dis-engauge the snap ring from the bearing, and pull the housing back and out of the car.

You'll need another pair of snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring holding the bearing to the output shaft. Make sure the groove on the bearing is closer to the front.

You'll want to replace the snap ring access cover gasket, and the tail shaft gasket.

Can you help me find the parts I need.....??

Advance and Autozone are hopeless...........NAPA lists a "Transfer Case Front Output Shaft Bearing"....(sounds right.......BUT, never done one....don't know the proper name for it....).and they do NOT list a bushing or gaskets that I can find........It seems to be the only part available from NAPA......

Is there an online supplier I can rely on to sell me the correct parts? I also need the rear mount bushing (it's knocked to snot from vibration...looks like it was nylon in there.....)..................................

Thanks in advance................ Doc :read2:

Hey Pastor Tom
I recently bought a rear bushing and tailshaft/driveshaft seal set from Autozone. for a 727 it was Timken 5206 I believe.
The bearing# I dont have.
The last one I did I pulled the bearing, got the # off it, then went to NAPA.
Make sure to watch the clocking of the oil gallery, the bushing will be starved of oil if not installed properly.
There is a tool set, (isn't there always) that can extract and install the rear bushing and rear seal without taking the trans apart. I found mine (Snapon/Blue Point) on Ebay after searching for years. Big score for 25 Bucks.
You can get it done without the tool too.
Good Luck and have fun.

You want to clarify the "oil gallery" statement for me a bit?

.........and what kind of mess am I facing pulling the tailshaft section out.....How much fluid loss can I expect, and what's the best way to drain it out before I get drowned? I'll be doing this on my back....NOT on a lift.....

Sure.
The rear trans bushing is fed fluid just like engine main and cam bearings. There will be a hole thru the bushing leading to grooves on the face of the bushing. It'll be really clear when you see it.
You will see the passage cast into the housing, install the bushing like you would a cam bearing.
I had mine out on a bench, so can't be sure of the best way to do it on your back. Get the rear as high as you can would be the obvious advice, but thats all I got.

Guys.........IF I decide NOT to tackle this, how much would you say would be a reasonable flat rate for this job from a transmission shop?

Any figures??

A trans shop will quote the labor time from a manual . Their hourly rate and their markup on parts and materials is what covers there arse. They know if it leaks , etc.., you'll bring it right back and let them do it again on their dime.
I farm out a lot of jobs today that I once did on my back. My true reason is my physical condition today but I tell myself and others that those employed mechanics need to eat too.

Yeah, I agree...........BUT, I've been burned by a few garages (a far fetched story, I know.................8))..........

If the 727 would normally be a grand for a rebuild, I'm wondering what a fair or normal price would be on just the tailshaft bearing and seal job.......

Any ballparks?

PastorTom it's really not a hard job at all. If you jack the rear of the car up 6-8 inches higher than the front allmost all of the trans fluid will run forward into the pan. You'll get a very small ammount drain out but probably less than 1/2 quart.

BTW: There is 2 other parts you need to remove Chris forgot to mention. Remove the driveshaft (I know that's a no brainer) and remove the speedo cable and adapter housing. Just unscrew the speedo cable then remove the 5/15" bolt in the clamp holding the speedo adapter housing and pull the housing out. Make sure before you pull it out to clean it up and mark it so you get it back in correctly. Their clocked according to which speedo gear is used. It shouldn't take you more than 2 to 2-1/2 hrs. I wouldn't think. Iv'e doen them before so I can do them in a little over an hour.

just pull the tail shaft an take it to the shop an have them put the bushing in it .the bearing is so simple to do its not even funny . one snap ring an pull the bearing off put a new one on done deal less than an hr . if you need the bearing do you have a place in your town that deals in nothing but bearing they will have one or just talk to the trans guy most likely to have one laying around
