74 duster ignition problem

-
Ok thanks a bunch...Well it looks like the person that had the car before me painted the engine bay black and left some things still in there and painted them black with it...it's real professional work :toothy10:

It looks like a herd of drunk squirrels got after the wiring.

We'll get if figured out.

Does the car start and run at all, or is that the problem - it won't start?

It runs great and starts right up when you put a screwdriver to the solenoid haha thanks for the squirrel comment haha it needs a lil TLC! It just won't start by the key only

I try to help with electrical problems when I can. My best advise here is to disconnect the battery. If there hasn't been a fire in there before... probably gonna be. I see large gauge wires conected to small gauge wires with twist nuts. Looks like a Ford starter silinoid or is that a Murray LOL.
What a freakin mess.

O dang I never knew that that could happen...i'll disconnect that battery and i'm not sure what kind it is

Let's get back on this wiring puzzle...

Keep in mind, the pics with the yellow engine bay are from my son's '74 Dart Sport with a slant six/904, and we did remove the EGR valve. You can see in the first four pics that the EGR timer (brown plastic item on the firewall) is connected to a short "pigtail" of wires with plug-in terminals. These wires all either connect to the choke control, or they go to ground on the top of the engine near the choke control. Only one of the wires goes over to the starter relay.

In the next pic, the neutral/safety switch wires go right up to the left bulkhead connector, as I said earlier. Pics with the black engine bay are from my son's '74 Duster with a 360/727.

If you don't have a choke control, I suspect you won't need to hook up the EGR delay. I believe you need to hook up your neutral/safety switch to the bulkhead connector - both of our '74 model cars do.

Let me know if this helps, or just makes it more confusing,
Jerry

Let's try this wiring diagram. You can see how the EGR timer connects to the starter relay, electric choke control, and the EGR vacuum solenoid. We removed EGR-related stuff on my son's slant six, so one of the wires is not connected on his car. The choke control and starter relay are hooked up, however. You may have to print out the image to be able to read everything, or I can email it to you. I'll add some more diagrams later for the neutral safety switch.

was the starter relay,I replaced it with made in u.s.a. used one works good now!
Same problem here and yes it is a p.i.t.a. I have replaced the starter solenoid and it solved the problem temporarily. Now Im back to opening the hood and using a screwdriver. WTF?
