Greetings!

Are these 8.75 - 741 & 489 Rear Ends Worth Restoring? Or are they junk?

Also is there a 8.75 for A bodies and a 8.75 for B bodies. Or are they all the same?

Thanks for the help...

Alec

The Chucks will bolt into all 8.75 housings. I believe the B body housing is a bit wider !/4 each side maybe 1/2" Total? Someone will chime in on that. Those are non posi chucks but you could buy posi units and ring and pinion overhaul kit. The chucks the way they are now can still be sold for someone I'm sure. The 489 case is desirable.

Yes 489 case is most desirable, however the 741 was a standard case on performance A body cars. For general street use with a hopped up A body a 741 is plenty. They are all worth more than scrap value.

I would not “throw any of them out of bed.”

they all have value. Bare Cases worth $75.00 - $125.00 each. The yokes worth $50.00 each and if rebuilt properly with new gears and bearings and a clutch type locker they are selling for $800-$1200.00. Or use them as a boat anchor. Again- all has value - it’s how you use it. Lol!

Sure would like to have the 741 if it didn't cost a million dollars to get it to Ohio!!
Take off the yoke, set it in a 5 gallon spackle bucket with padding around it and plywood under it, set the yoke in there with it. Put the lid on and tag the lid in place with drywall screws around the perimeter so it cant pop off. Send it UPS ground, and go thru the UPS terminal to ship, do not use a pack n mail place or a UPS store. Should cost about $60

Glassbead will clean those spider gears up like new. They only appear to have surface rust, no pitting.
Actually, that ring gear looks like a 3.23 or better. You can tell by the thickness. It may clean up too, worth a shot.

Not to get off topic? But I got a 489 case 3.55 gears open that was just serviced new seal etc and patterned check how much could I get for it?

I'd imagine a couple hundy for it. FYI The sure grip part fits all 3 cases 741, 742, 489

:rofl::rofl:
