I've seen mention of such a thing but can't seem to locate one. I'd like to keep a standard pan but with a drain plug. Rumor has it later models had them.

Dorman has a nice pan that is listed for a 42RH transmission. It will fit the 904. However it is deeper than the stock 904 pan.

I have never seen one. I wonder if there is enough room between the pan and the valve body for a drain plug? I put a deep one on my 904 on my Swinger. Why don't you want a deep pan?

Deep pan? I have heard that my babied convertible with lazy summer driving (although I put on 2-3k a year) with a deep pan is overkill. Maybe not. If it's plug and play with most decent deep pans, I'd consider it.

That Dorman pan is deeper than the stock pan, but not much. Not more than an inch deeper. I have not measured mine. It is not expensive like a "race" pan.

Steel ok as opposed to cast aluminum? Never sure which one fits my 65 Valiant 225 though. Summit sometimes says not a fit. Layson's has a nice one too but it's steel.

The Dorman pan will fit a cable shifted 904. The only problem is, the pan flange covers one of the bolts for the park cable housing. The original pan has a cutout in that area, so the bolt can be accessed. If using the Dorman pan, you would need to remove the pan to access that bolt.

If you are referring to Laysons TM-07886 pan, it will have the same issue with the pan flange covering the park cable housing bolt. Also do not use that filter extension without modifying it by adding a second fluid hole, or you will burn up the rear pump in the trans. That trans pan kit is for 1966 and later 904. As stated in post #7 you could install a drain plug in your pan.

I must have got lucky, stock steal pan, with a drain plug, I bet the seller I got it from put it in his self , I am sure a machine shop would do it for vert little charge, maybe I need to buy a few 904 pans and do a run on 3 or four of them, I see I can buy a magnetic bolt in drain pan kit for little cost.

I think it was B&M used to sell a drain plug kit for the transmission pans that just required you to drill the hole in the pan.

Yes, they sure did, it had a washer inside and out, your right

There's absolutely no reason to avoid a deep pan unless you're scraping pavement. The trans pan is typically not the lowest thing on the vehicle. Make sure it includes a filter spacer so it pulls from the bottom of the pan, and add a magnet.

So remove the pan, drill a hole through it, weld a 1/2" x 20 nut on the bottom and put a 1/2" x 20 drain plug in it. Less than an hour's work.

Magnet is good, but finding a correct spacer will be difficult. The 65 trans has a rear pump and needs a spacer with two fluid holes. Probably would need to add the additional hole. The correct filter also needs two holes, but those are available.

Well thanks to a favorite used parts vendor, I found a steel 904 with drain plug in perfect condition. Question for someone: Since it's plain steel I'd like to paint it. The outside is important but does anyone think coating the lubed inside is necessary? I'd like to do this spray myself using POR or something similar. Thoughts?
