A story with a cautionary note to it

I don't consciously chk for the oring stuck to block, but I always chk/peek at old filter when I remove it
Interestingly I always wipe the mounting surface on the motor clean before putting a new filter on

If it's not shinny metal it stands out.

I've run plastic for 12 years now. Used what came with Autometer gauges. Now I may have replaced it once as maintenance(no leaks)
A tech inspector at Lebanon Valley Dragway said they wouldn't allow you to run with a plastic OPS line. An AN line is nice too, but sometimes because of the larger inside diameter it often takes a moment for the guage to move.

I was maybe 19 years old and had a Toyota 4x4 mini truck that was under a year old. I changed oil in my driveway.

Then drove down the street, stopped at the stop sign, proceeded across and up a hill. I saw the oil light come on and looked in the rear view mirror where I saw an oil streak .

Pulled over and yup, oil dripping from the filter. Walked home and got my dad. Went back with oil and a new filter. Found the extra filter rubber gasket as soon as I removed the filter.

Great lesson and this thread is a good reminder!!

my first year as a (tech) i blew-up a ford van cause i double oringed it
now i always wipe the filter base off with a rag and look for shinny metal
found out just cause when you pull the filter off and there is an o-ring on it doesn't mean the last guy didn't leave it
seen double orings on cartage filters too
