I was installing a remanufactured AC Delco starter for my LA318, and as I was tightening it down. I heard two loud pops inside my bellhousing. I removed the starter and trans, and found that the extruded boss that supports the starter's nosecone had shattered and was sitting against the inspection/divider plate. I was curious if it would be possible to still operate the engine and start with that piece broken, since the force of deflection is still going against the part of the boss that wasn't broken off, or if there were any methods of permanent repair that I could follow to get that piece back where it was. I can send some pictures in case anyone needs specific visual details that I might have left out in my post.

Sounds like the wrong nose and it did not go into the support hole. I would change it and not use it personally.

Interesting, I forgot to mention it's an exact reman of the one I pulled off (Same part number and dimensions for bolt holes.) Would there be any discrepancy between factory OEM and remanufactured starter nose cones or if they possibly changed their design at all during 68?
