Acid reflux?

-
RustyRatRod; have you ever been checked for H-pylori? (Helicobacter pylori) It is a bacterial infection which causes ulcers, acid reflux and a host of other stomach issues including cancer. See the link below on webMD;

http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/h-pylori-helicobacter-pylori

It is believed that 50% of the (world) population has it BUT, that 80% of those who have it never have a problem from it. I am in the 20%, and was treated for it back in the late 90's with anti-biotic. I have recently been diagnosed with it again and a Dr. has me on a natural remedy for 30 days. He says anti-biotics will not kill it, but what I am taking will. (inexpensive capsule at any health food store like Vitamin World). Other Dr's prescribe the anti-biotic.

Not sure with your history of meds (if I understand you correctly) if they might be the cause, but I would get checked for H-pilori.

Secondly; Have you ever tried taking Acidophilus? It is a "natural" pro-biotic, or good bacteria and promotes good digestion. It is inexpensive and available at Walmart, Vitamin World, GNC etc. Capsules work better for me than tablets. My youngest daughter recently found this helps her acid reflex, as have I.

For what it's worth, I have less and less faith in the prescription drugs I have had trouble with over the years. Maybe I am just getting cynical because I am getting old. :)

I had really bad heart burn for quite sometime, went to the urgent care clinic, diagnostic as acid reflux, prescribed Nexium, 3 days later I was in the e.r., damn near brought me to tears, and was given an ultrasound, blood work, cat scan, and turns out it was my gall bladder. That bad boy was enlarged and the gall stones were stopping the regulation of the bile. Had surgery, and sooooo much better now.

Point here is, could it be your gall bladder as that will cause acid reflux.

YES. I have! several times and as of yet, I do not have it.

You'll have to wait a few weeks, though.

....and thanks for not threatening to take my "stick", again! :poke:

I'm gonna GIVE you my walkin stick. Shifter handle first. You're gonna have a Hurst 4 speed shift pattern bashed into your forehead. lol

It might look cool if I got it straight. LMAO

I just had my GB removed about 6 weeks ago... Typically get sharp pains on right side upper quadrant of stomach that radiates to back in exact location and then sharp pains can shoot up to back of right shoulder blade ... ALSO eat a burger and fries ... if you take a dump within the hour .. GB needs to be checked .
I dont know how old you are ...but i found as you get older you have to curb your eating and drinking habits...

Little more medical advice for you. Another vote for Omeprazole. That stuff really works. Not over the counter, you will need a prescription.

I had acid reflux and heartburn for years and by the time I was treated, I had a vallecular cyst growing in my throat. True to form I ignored it till it almost blocked my airway. Just about said goodnight that time. If you like emergency ambulance trips and ENT specialists, you would love this. Best see a doctor.

I had to look up to see what acid reflux actually is.

sorry to hear you guys have that problem ...sounds horrible.

no one in my biological family has ever had this so I wonder if its a genetic thing that happens.

we are also known to eat very spicy food, so I wonder if eating spicy food would help any.

I don't think so, Rani. My filipino wife eats a lot of spicy stuff with no ill effects, so I guess it has something to do with genetics.

I used to take Prilosec then when the patent expired I was taking nexium (same thing). That was for years. I drank a lot of beer and a lot of strong ice tea, drove my skid steer mower and tractor which also have adverse effects on the valve that is supposed to make the food pipe a one way trip.

Here is how I stopped it all... In the morning I get a big cup of water and pour in a bunch of baking soda. I drink water all day (until I get home from work then it is beer or the homemade wine) and that first glass with the baking soda is how I am changing my body Ph from acidic to alkaline. I was nebulizing with hydrogen peroxide but the water is easier. Put in enough that you can taste it but not so much that you hate the taste. Doing this every day I have not had reflux in over a year. if I do something silly like munch out late at night on a box of hot wings I will take pre-emptive steps of taking a Alka-seltzer gold in water.

Do your own research but acidity is what is killing us. I think it is from the food we eat these days. If you have a basic Ph (not an acid one) you have a much less chance of getting cancer. Doctors and the med industry don't want us healthy so there is no talk of this. You have to look it up yourself.

Anyways, the baking soda is cheap. I go through a box in about 2 weeks.

And as for sleep, I am an old throwback cause I still sleep on a waterbed. The internal doc who was prescribing the reflux meds said he had to quit cause those don't let you sleep with your throat higher than your stomach. I have a bunch of pillows and do try to sleep inclined, but it doesn't always work that way (refer to the beer and homemade wine).

Those pills are over a $1 each after insurance. they were going up each year. I don't think people need them and how good is it anyways to have the acid production in your stomach thwarted anyways (food digestion)?

Your milage may vary. Good luck.

I've been dealing with acid reflux for 20 years. Now I am hooked on prilosec.
Sometimes I wake from a dead sleep with what I refer to as choking-hot-puke-in my throat. For the first couple seconds I feel like I'm dying. Just two days ago, I had an Endoscopy for the first time. It's an imaging tube they stick down your throat and check out your esophogus (sp) and stomach. Nothing showed up!
Sooo. either I stop smoking and significantly change my diet, or just keep taking Prilosec. It blows.

I was also that bad. I would get rings in the food pipe that would prevent big chunks of food going all the way down. had to have those rings broken by endoscopy twice.

This baking soda thing is working for me. My bottle of Nexium pills sits in the drawer and has not been opened in a year. And like I said, I have a box of alkaseltzer gold there for emergencies like late night hot wing ingestion.

One more thing, about this time I also had a chronic cough and very raspy voice. It was from coughing all the time, sometimes all night. One day I noticed my tongue was all white and it had been like that for what seems like forever. That is called Candida, it is a fungus. I was killing that candida by spraying the 3% hydrogen peroxide on my tongue and scraping the resulting white foam off with a toothbrush. between that peroxide and the subsequent baking soda water my tongue is pink again. The reflux and the candida may be related, I dunno.

Read the recent warnings about using Prilosec (omeprazole) and brittle bones. Even one two week course in a year is too much.

I always thought baking soda was a good thing to use. For now, I am trying out the apple cider vinegar. I even like the taste!

For now, I am trying out the apple cider vinegar.

That to me sounds "counter."

I'm fairly intolerant of acid. I had one hell of a time when I had to prep for my very first colonoscopy some time ago. Only thing I found that didn't "tear up my guts" was low sodium chicken broth

Well Obamacare is here so I ain't worried. He's gonna take care of me.

Yeah, baking soda works wonders, problem with that is it's high in sodium. Sodium is not good for high blood pressure. That meant I had to find another way to treat the heartburn. Pepcid AC chewable is the bomb! Man it works great!

Here is a link to a website: http://www.refluxmd.com/learn/resources/2013-05-01/2427/apple-cider-vinegar-acid-reflux

It suggests using 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons mixed with 8 oz. of water with meals or when you have heartburn. You can mix in 1-2 tablespoons of honey if desired to make it taste better. If you prefer to drink it straight, know that it will erode your tooth enamel, so it's better to sip it thru a straw.

I'll be starting this myself today.

Now I've been doing this two days and it seems to be working. Yeah, I know it sounds counterintuitive, but I've heard and read many reviews of this method and they love it. Anyways, do what works for you and watch out for too much sodium (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate) and brittle bones (from Prilosec).

Apple Cider Vinegar, kills my acid reflux almost instantly.

My wife uses Apple Cider Vinegar capsules, they work for her but not for me.

273..is there a low sodium broth? I just had another probe at 45yrs and finally I'm on the 10 year plan.

I don't even remember where I bought this. I'd had it for some time. Of course as I'm sure you know a label that "claims" low sodium might only mean a few percentage points of reduction, LOL

Hello..just saw this post...hit like a brick..iv been under the care of a GI specialist for some years..acid reflux can cause more prob than just burn pain..iv been taking omeprazole [Prilosec] one tab daily in the morn first thing and nothing else for a half hour..she wanted me to take it at night also but I drew the line....havnt had any heart burn issues since..oh and you can put two blocks of wood under your bed feet to angle it a little.helps keep it down]and set a time limit at night to stop eating and drinking...these things REALLY helped me..oh or you can grin and bear it...lol...yuk...hope its better,i know its terrible stuff..GL..J

X2!! Also, I have found that if I feel mild reflux coming on when I first lay down, I get back up and get a slice of cheese or a few bites of ice cream. Probably not good from a weight gain / fat intake standpoint, but the dairy seems to coat things till the Pepcid can kick in.

Of course, I could just change my habits, but for the last 25 years it's been 2 packs of smokes and a full pot of coffee every day, and steak with lotsa Montreal seasoning as often as I can convince the wife to make it, 2 to 4 times a week. Some of you will say I sound like a time bomb, but the blood pressure is normal to slightly low, my blood oxygen content is the best of the entire family (almost all non-smokers), and walking a mile uphill does not raise my pulse significantly.
