ANNOYING EXHAUST SOUND

Flowmaster resonators worked for me.

Yes.....Bassy. How do you get rid of it?

I paid big bucks for this system on a cruiser.......How do I fix it?
I think you may be hearing the exhaust bonusing off the road. My van has duel 2.5" exhaust coming out in front of the rear tires and if I'm passing someone or in a tunnel (yes, we have a tunnel in Ft. Lauderdale), the sound is amplified. In your case, as your speed increases, the sound is left behind you, so others can enjoy your music.

these are what you recommended for me a while back. Waker 17748 Super turbos... still haven't gotten a chance to order and install them.. you have anything quiet you can recommend or are they the best choice in your opinion?
The Walkers is what I have been using for 50 years, and they have a soft sound, but deep rumble at idle or low speeds, but will open up when the pedal is touching the metal.

You can try a Helmholtz resonator. Takes some minor calculations and some fab work but have heard great things.

You could install resonators like Vibrant which should but but may not completely eliminate the drone.

Different mufflers, something with a straight through design. A lot of guys use Dynomax Ultra Flows. I felt they were too quiet, but didn’t drone. Many others out there.
Google Helmholz exhaust & you'll see them for sale. Most need mounted next to mufflers.
I've wondered if resonators mounted after the mufflers next to leaf springs might also work(if enough room) may be easiest cheapest fix. Some are stuffed with Steel Wool instead of fibreglas & last longer.
Anyone tried that? Or a set of cherry bomb type mufflers, again with Streel Wool.

OVERVIEW

Flowmaster's universal resonator helps avoid interior drone with an innovative product designed by Flowmaster's advanced R & D lab. Featuring a 2.50 inch offset inlet, 2.50 inch same side offset outlet, it delivers sound control on tough to quiet applications unlike anything else on the market. Flowmaster's universal resonator can be installed in front of or behind the muffler in new or existing installations and will work with other muffler types beyond Flowmaster. These amazing resonators feature full 409S stainless construction and are backed by our limited lifetime warranty. Best of all, they contain no packing materials so the tone achieved on initial start up, is the tone for life. These resonators have proven to be very effective when installed in the tailpipes behind the mufflers in dual muscle car applications, but can also be used in smaller displacement truck and SUV applications.

Features:

  • Universal
  • Reduces interior resonance
  • Universal inline resonator 2.50 in. inlet and outlet
  • Durable fully welded 409 stainless steel

standing wave in the exhaust
anything you can do to alter the length before the muffler will alter the RPM it drones at, for better or worse, trial and error really.

resonator achieves the same because its basically a muffler with no muffle, as it were.
its there to disrupt the standing wave so the droney-ness is reduced at the rpm you heard it at but hopefully its moved to an rpm where you don't care.

What about a resonator in the tailpipes? I really have no room in front of the muffler because the system is nicely tucked up high.

Hi Folks

Just the facts Ma am'

1971 340 Demon.
Comp xe 262 Cam
Thermoquad Carb
727 trans with 2600 stall
3.23 gears
68-70 exhaust manifolds with TTI 2 1/2 inch exhaust......H pipe with turn downs.
Borla Mufflers

This thing sounds like you are blowing across a bottle top from about 1300 to 2300 (is this drone?). Sound is the same cruising at 40 mph, as it is at fast idle.

Once you get up to cruise at 50mph and 2500 RPM you can hardly hear it, and what you can hear is awesome.

No sound deadening other than what came from the factory.

I would really NOT like to add the chrome extensions unless they make a night and day difference.

Any suggestions???
Never liked borla exhaust, try dynomax ultraflos

I've wondered if a small muffler at the end of a piece of pipe T'd into the exhaust might help. Dead end, no exit. Or something like a muffler in an H pipe after the mufflers, fed from each side.

you could use one there anything that alters the reflections of pulses in the system can change the situation.. but as i say could be for better or worse.

there are complicated equations that can be used to establish wave behaviour of a gas in an open pipe of differing diameters, so in theory you could design a system around a set of parameters that made sure that you didn't drone at common speed limit speeds.

but hey that's gonna be degree level hard work, i.e a bit more complicated than working out the length and bore of the organ pipe for middle C on a church organ, in comparison to a pipe for low C.
Which i think is as far as i got at school, before my brain fried.

solid theory but hard work when the pump is changing speed the volume of gas is changing and its being pulsed by a valve of diameter X into a pipe that combines with 2 or 3 or 4 others of diameter Y into a pipe of diameter Z at a distance of 3 foot from the valve etc etc for the full length of the system.

I was picking my third set of mufflers yesterday and watching videos.. the borlas (xs pros) sounded bad all around to me and i found others complaining of drone.. I ended up ordering Hooker Max Flows.. i found a chart of like 15 mufflers with db's at idle/2000/wot and the hookers had the lowest at idle/cruise.. which is good for me.

Cant' wait to throw away these last mufflers

Not that this is the way to do it but a guy I know would buy mufflers from local stores and slip them on with band clamps, test out the sound, and take them back if he didn't like what he heard. Who wants mufflers on their Mopar that makes it sound like a late model Mustang.:rofl:

yeah... i love the sound of the max flows in videos.. and mine being 3" will be a bit louder than the 2.5s i hear but should be ok...Those Summit "Turbo" mufflers i got really screwed me... ended up costing $2k chasing issues...

Nice sound. They sound great when he get's with the program but a nice mellow tone when just cruising. Drone at a certain rpm can be annoying.

yeah... my car is usually around 2800-3000 which should be out of drone range...

I put Dynomax Super Turbos on my Swinger but it's just a stock 318 2 barrel with some home made dual exhaust. The old mufflers were rotted and these were the right size and available at a local Farm store. They are pretty quiet at idle. .
