I just picked up a 4-speed transmission today from a guy cleaning his garage out and was told it was early mopar A-Body, small block application. Its been in storage for about 28 years. There was an aluminum tag on it which I believe was the date code ( 4-67 )??

There was also these numbers, c95664 z, 6-10, c97372, and c96706k. Can anyone tell me what these numbers mean and what it came out of? Date ? etc??

I also purchased his 340 engine, it still had a vin on the side of "OR197483" Can anyone tell me what this was out of?? The date on it reads 11-19-68 or 69. Hard to tell. Thanks.
 
The numbers that begin with (C) are casting ID numbers from the forging company.The number you got off the stamping pad on the right side of the tranny are the numbers you need.
On the pad is or should be a 17 digit code:
PP or PK,then 833,then a four digit number to show the production date of a 10,000 day calendar,then a four digit number to show a sequence number for that day.
Example:pP83323230123
PP is for New Process or PK for Kokomo
833 is for the tranny type 4 speed manual
2323 is for the date of a 10,000 day calendar,nov 07 1967
the 0123 is the sequence number for that day,being the 123 tranny built that day.
You shuld also have the vin number on this pad of the car in was in too,a 13 digit code.
The OR197483 is this:
O= 1970
R=Windsor canada plant
197483 is the last 6 digits of the serial number of the car it was in.

The guy was 90% sure it was out of a 70 challenger...?? How would one know? Can this be determined? Thanks.
 
Ok, just found out that the Canada plant only made Dart's and Duster's that year so it must be from one of them......
 
I have a 340 with the same type of numbers, OR247269.

There's no way to tell what it's from. Numbers from the front of the block, just under the drivers side head, will reveal the day the motor was built up. It should read something like this, here is mine:

FWP31390007

F = 1970
W = Windsor
P = Premium Fuel
3139 = Mar. 2, 1970
0007 = seventh motor of the day
 
65s, how does 3139 translate into March 2, 1970 ? I cannot figure this one out? Thanks. (just curious how that works)
 
It's a 10,000 day calender system used by Chrysler for engine stamp numbers. Not sure when it started, but 3139 is March 2, 1970. The calender I have (Galen Govier white books version) shows July 1, 1967 as 1799 but doesn't show anything earlier. I guess you could figure it out. As is the Galen Govier way, anything made prior to then isn't worthy of documenting I guess.
 
I thought the trans had the partial vin on the passenger side, lower part on a raised flat with the #'s stamped in. Sometimes the paint or grease hides the stamped #'s...Good luck!
 
If it was a challenger tranny, wouldnt the tail shaft be noticeably different than an a body?
 
Yes, if it was an E-body trans. the tailshaft on the trans. would be longer.
