Bonneville Landspeed Racing - Let's Try a Thing.

So, the diff yoke showed up. I even ordered the correct one this time!! Yay me. Driveshaft looks to be at 55.5" center of cap to center of cap with approximately 1" of slip yoke pulled out of the trans.

And MRI is set for Feiday night at 6:45. Booboo. Up at 2:30 for a 12hr day, that is pretty late. Won't be home until close to 9.

Started playing with scoop/hood bubble and spiuker ideas. If it was a lift off hood, I'd likely go right to the windshield, but this basic shape of what pro mod turbo cars are going to it seems, so it can't be all bad.

The spoiler looks good, but I have to say I am not loving the hood. I was looking at pictures of Bonneville cars and I see where you are getting your inspiration from though. I am not a big fan of cowl hoods either. Have you thought of a teardrop scoop like they had on the Ford Thunderbolts? Seems like the leading edge may cut the wind well, and it could even be extended back towards the windshield rather than rounded at the back. Pretty cheap at Speedway Motors.

Thanks and I am not in love with it either. Thinking this AM, I don't need an air filter at Bonneville (as I am told by all of the racers there), so the bulge can be quite a bit narrower and shorter. May cut it down and look at it. Currently there is a 14" filter under there. I like the Thunderbolt scoops (not technically a scoop) and it would extract hot air from under the hood. I will have to see how tall I need it without the filter and see if there is one with enough height.

So, I had what I thought was a scare over the weekend. Looked like a lot of metallic in the oil from the Charger motor. More than expected for a used engine that worked in Dad's car when it was pulled. I brought the filter in to work, cut it and it I don't see anything worth worrying about. So, unless something happens unexpectedly, game on... Was pretty worried that I was going to have to sell the other kidney to build something new already.

Talking with an lubricant engineer at work, it seems maybe just the cleaning of the Rotella T diesel oil I used. Sludge? And it drained for a couple days, slurry stayed on top of the new oil. We will see

Hoping your MRI results are positive.
I am not sure how I feel about the upcoming results. On one hand it has been a year for this to be this bad. I dont want to be cut and fused if I can help it, but something has to give. What I will not do it bandaid **** to prolong this if surgery is inevitable. My max out of pocket for insurance will be close soon, get it done now vs starting it all over again next year.

We will see if I can still make it this year. 150 club would be easier than a Competition car money wise..

I wish all the best for you! Not much to do with Bonnevile here but… no one looks forward to a fusion and the following therapy (a lot of arm bike usage after initial restrengthening) but the immediate relief is usually worth it. The muscle pain you trade for the pain from pinched nerves is a whole lot easier deal with. When you have a disc go out, the gel that comes out onto the nerves is full of antigens that turn on the pain signal. If it’s out on a nerve nodule, the pain is literally like being bent over backwards.

My wife is going through this now. surgery has been recommended, but she keeps trying different pain management therapies to hold it off. I think the surgery is inevitable, but she has to come to that decision.

Thanks. I do not want to be cut if possible, but absolutely will before just prolonging everything. I delt with my shoulder issue way too long. Months of chiropractic and physical therapy only to need surgery anyway. I got to where I needed to lift my right arm up to my desk with my left just to use the computer. Wont do that again. I will be sure to let everyone know what they say, what the plan is and go from there. If surgery is recommended, then I want to put it off to mid/late Sept. Enjoy the summer and the salt even if not taking my car. Then spend the fall concentrating on getting fixed up.

First, i stopped by Van's Auto Mopar reatoration parts and picked up a windshield gasket and trim clips. Then a scoop can be figured out.

Second... For MRI. I am being referred to a surgeon. Appt on Monday AM to see what his thoughts are. Not positive it will be surgery, but i told the other doc I have been dealing with this for over a year already. No more ******* around. I am not going to continue just pissing money away while in pain. The idea of to see what the surgeon wants prior to any thoughts of cutting me, unless he is certain he can fix it. I will know more on Monday.

So, PST got my slip yoke, so they are building me a driveshaft. I decided on 4" aluminum with 1350 Spicer joints. Should be about a week. Then I will need to get some axles yet. Should be the last of any big stuff. My buddy picked me up a 4x8 sheet of 1/8 aluminum for spoiler and other projects.

I went 3.5" steel... i think it will hold up to my beastly 318 :)

I think if you could make the sides of the scoop a gentle slope and then meld into the hood it would look better, and like 2" lower

It is mostly about critical speed for me. The rpm at which the harmonics will destroy itself. It is rpm and length based. This is also rated at 1200hp for future plans.

One of the biggest issues with the scoop is the down Slope before the windshield. It should really go directly to the windshield and for my application should really be front opening. More like this.

Just curious.. if front opening is better why do nascar guys use the low pressure cowl area at 200mph?

something like this

the DC manual had some talk about scoops on Darts vs. Barracuda's (67-9). the short was that a Barracuda got more air with a forward opening scoop while a Dart would be fine with cowl induced air intake. windshield angle was the deciding factor. granted, this was 20 plus years ago so minds might have changed ...

ah fair enough... so the trick way would be to make a forward leaning windshield and funnel it into a cowl intake :)
