Any FABO members run a Borg and Beck style three finger clutch without an override spring?
I pulled a shot (worn to the rivets) B&B style clutch out or my car. Replaced it with a 9 1/2" LUK assembly from RockAuto. Disc, pressure plate, and bearing were all a perfect match to the old parts I pulled out, carefully compared before I put the new one in. I have pictures and saved the old clutch.
But I cannot get the clutch adjusted. The override spring overtakes the pedal and pushes it toward the floor. And the throw-out bearing is in constant contact with the pressure plate. YES, there is a return spring on the clutch fork under the car.
I have disconnected everything from the z-bar, and it moves freely, not binding anywhere. The clutch fork is centered on the pivot and the throw-out bearing is centered, making nice contact with the three fingers on the pressure plate. I put a new bronze pilot bushing in the crank.
I have lubed the heck out of the pedal assembly under the dash. The plastic bushings in the z-bar are in good condition and also freshly greased with an all-purpose grease.
I have spent two weeks trying to get the clutch adjusted just right. At this point, I'm ready to cut the f*(#ing override spring off and muscle my leg on the clutch pedal.
I have read through the whole 4-speed forum and do not see where anyone has ever run a B&B style clutch WITHOUT the override spring. I think if I get rid of the override spring, my troubles will be over. Anyone try this before?
