In converting to a new floor shifter with cables, and hooking up to a torqueflite, can anyone tell me what kind of trouble we'll run into as far as the stock neutral safety switch and the like?

The new shifters say they have a switch in them.........are they made to hook up to our existing cables?...........or do we need to cut and splice these things?

I'd really like to hook one up, but want to know from some experienced guys what to expect............the shifter is on the column right now..........want to get it on the floor...............we're only concerned about stuff that's a real pain to deal with.................pointers??

Thanks................ Doc :read2:

Your neutral sfety switch in trans mounted so not a factor. The switch on the aftermarket shifter may be needed for reverse lamps though , depending on year model. You may not need it at all

Most aftermarket shifters either come with a cable or tell you which one to buy. They will also specify what adapter brackets you need at the transmission. Consult the shifter manufacturer for all the parts you need. Yes, this will add significantly to the cost of the shifter.

As far as NSS and reverse lamp wiring, leave the factory stuff alone and you'll be fine (assuming you have the 3-pin switch in your case.)

Now, if you are running a pre-66 cable shift case, thats a whole other issue.

I'm not sure on your car but, on the early a's it is somewhat a PITA. I think I went with the promaticII and a bouchilon cable system for the shifter and kickdown.. I had to cut out a piece of the tunnel for the mounting brackets and put in a piece that had a hump to it. It is very tight but it works perfect. The shifter has switches for reverse lights and neutral safety. I think I just disconeccted the wires from the old neutral switch and routed them to the one on the shifter.
