Can't get rid of my old parts

I sold a steering wheel to a member and UPS and FedEx wouldnt even touch it, they say its too much hassle to ship personal stuff to the US since the US attached all the new rules and fees and most private individuals cant fill out the forms correctly and the item ends up being returned or undeliverable

I've used the Zonos app a few times and have got comfortable with it. I haven't had to pay duty or tariffs classifying parts as 'classic car parts'.

I can only imagine how things are for yall north of the border. All those extra fees and duties have never made sense to me. We're all on the same hunk of dirt. It's nothing more than a money grab.

I am. I've actually been putting it off for a while. I need the space badly, so I ain't gonna put it off any longer. Gonna be some nice G scale, On30 scale and HO scale stuff goin to the dump soon, along with some good car parts.

Some guys are truly nuts. There is a guy on another site that asked if anyone had interest in these parts he had before he took them to the scrapper. I said I might. Turns out 120.00 plus shipping later for parts he was going to junk. I said no thanks. Some people are just FS.

Yeah last week I got the 'do you deliver' request on a $25 part. One guy wrote me a couple terse messages because I declined his low ball offer. All I said was 'I'll pass'.

I get the "Do you Deliver?" question on items I have listed for free all the time. It takes a special kind of person to have the gall to ask that of someone.

I've put some things up for sale here fairly recently and gotten disheartened because there was zero interest and zero offers, so I just closed the ads out. I'm always very negotiable on price, because I know how it is, but no one even offered a thing. I'm just gonna start hauling it off to the dump. I also have a LOT of model railroad items I need to get out of my way, too, but I'm gonna load the truck up and take it all to the dump, instead. It's become not worth it.

Before throwing the train stuff away, is there possibly a local model train club, children's hospital, or old folks home nearby to whom you could donate? Even Goodwill. It would be a shame to just toss it away forever.

The asking for delivery on an under $50 item drives me nuts. When we were still in the US a lady asked me to drive 1.5 hours over a $20 bike. When I told her no I said that’s not worth my time. Then she offered to meet halfway. Wait what so you have a car? Gave it to the neighbor kid instead.

My favorite was when I posted a free curbside pickup with random stuff. A lady messaged me about the shelf I put on there. For free. She asked if you can put stuff on the shelf. What am I supposed to do with that question, do you not know how to operate a shelf? Anyway…

I scoured Facebook marketplace every day and see the crazy asking price people want for junk.

If you place an ad (anywhere) and the item doesn't sell, or there is no interest, you need to look closely as to why. Is it an oddball car, part, or item that 1 in 10,000 may be interested in? Is it in the right ad group or forum? If you advertise a bumper for a Studebaker, may be 1 of the 65,000 members here would be interested. How about price? Are you asking a premium for a poor quality item? You can always reduce the price and see where that goes. Another thing that happens here too often, an item comes up for sale in a General forum and not a Marketplace Forum ad. And talking about ads, Title them with information that attracts buyers. Provide an accurate description, clear photos, price and location. Give me a reason to look closer at your ad.

You may have to junk, trash, or recycle parts that don't sell. It depends on how much work you want to put into selling them. I have a friend that brings the same old crusty wheels and hubcaps to every swap meet hoping to find a buyer. If it were me, I would have junked those parts long ago. Ya, we all have pieces like that laying around. Sell them cheap, give them away, or junk them if you want them out of your garage.

I've sold a good bit of stuff on FB Market Place. The higher dollar stuff usually weeds out the wanna be's. Sold a sheet metal break late in the summer and sold a 52" shear recently and yesterday a 50 year old 12v 3000 lb capacity SuperWinch went. I get asked quite often what my lowest price is and I just tell them the price is in the ad.

Yeah so many generations now don't carry the family mantel at all. Whether it's hobbies, or businesses or whatever. Kinda sad. I'm not getting out of it though, just changing scales. Again.

These things are cultural. Culture is taught in the home by mom, and grandparents.
What happens when mom no longer raises the kids?
What happens when the family is scattered across the country?

Even Victor Davis Hansen was talking about this issue.

Maintaining a culture that will take care of you in your old age is not only work, it takes time.

Television, newspapers, radio, internet, are all non-productive, or socially destructive time sinks.

There are only so many hours in a day, so many hours in a child's life to teach culture.

So, this is one of the consequences of the destruction of a cultural glue

Now, to the subject at hand, the first people to start selling off all the hobby stuff will be successful, the Johnny-come-latelys won't, and it will all end up in the attic, ignored. Or in the dump. The physical world items and activities we enjoyhave little appeal to younger generations who favor virtual worlds and have the attention span of a Zebra Finch.

Doing an engine swap cannot compete with the gamblers high dopamine hit of candy crush or onlyfans girls.

Possibly the case. I also try to sell a few things here and there, but try to price them reasonably. Actually, I've probably sold some things too cheap (lol) but I'm simply not going to try and gouge anybody. The fact is that MOST of our parts are not rare enough or scarce enough to bring the price that some folks are asking. Just my 2 cents!
