I got a line on a 72 400 2barrel out of a 72 new yorker, any chance this is a steel crank motor or is it more than likely a cast crank. I havent seen it yet, will I be able to tell by the balancer.

Some crazy things happened in 71-72 as they were fading out the 383 but in all likelyhood it'll be a cast unit. clink on the link for balancer I.D.

It has a better chance than you may think. I had a 1977 400 with a steel crank. I know the engine had never been into. There have been others as well.

400s were supposed to be all cast cranks, but you never know. Even the last 383s used cast cranks. And, yes Kim is correct about 440s. Very few New Yorkers from 66-78 had something other than a 440.

Every New Yorker I ever saw had a 440, I have even a untouched steel crank 440 motor that had a thin externally balanced 400 balancer on it! It was a 72 and I thought that was extremely weird! Musta been a bad Monday for someone at the engine assembly plant, remember truth is stranger than fiction!!!
