I have a inaccurate sending unit in my 66 Valient. Question I have is how low do I need to get the fuel level so I don’t have gas gushing out when I loosen the lock ring?

Disconnect the fuel line at the tank, attach about a foot of fuel line to the tank, and siphon it into some gas cans.

on my duster, under half a tank is fine

the real trick is replacing it with an accurate sending unit
about the only only way to get there is to have a stock unit rebuild

(ma mopar didnt use a linear scale, when she first made them, and all the aftermarket ones are, so an aftermarket of the shelf unit will never read right)

That's not the only way to get an accurate reading is to use an OEM sender, but it is the easiest. Or you can use an aftermarket sender, and put the meter match device I have in the pic below in line, and fine tune your gage to sender.

If you want to have your sender rebuilt, try Bob's Speedometer in Howell, MI. Wolf & Co. stopped doing them & they were excellent, Tristar radiator has a tremendous backlog & are not taking in any more business right now.

I know about the sending units, just need to know about the fuel
