What is the best way to clean items such as the alternator when cleaning up the engine compartment.

Interior or exterior? Interior use something made for cleaning radiators like a Prestone flush cleaner. Exterior, I removed the paint and polished with compound and a Dremel. Left it shiney and gold (brass).

After rereading, I misread "alternator" for "radiator".

Alternator cleaning I used a scrub brush and Super Clean degreaser. Then spray painted it with Diamond Clear from Eastwood.

If you can crack the alternator into the frame pieces, you can soak it in Simple Green or Berrymans. It gets AL very clean. Etching mag cleaner works good to, but leaves it a little gray. To get the rotor back into the brushes, you stick a paperclip into the brush holder hole to keep them retracted, insert shaft, then "pull the pin"
