Clearancing block for starter

-
I had to do a little light grinding on the larger ears on the pan rail surface on my 5.7 so the starter would seat a little cleaner. You wouldn't really even notice I did it if you didn't look close. I think the starter actually bolted up without having to grind anything, but it would have been riding on the block the whole time, so I imagine I may have had an issue in the long run. I think the outside of the blocks are the same between a 5.7 and 6.1, so you'd probably have to do something similar. I just used a stock mini starter from a late model Dakota.

I had to grind on mine. It wouldn't sit flush unless I did. No big deal at all

Why not use a factory starter? You wouldn't have to do anything.

Why not use a factory starter? You wouldn't have to do anything.

Couple of reasons -

1 - I already have a small block mini starter from my previous 318/392 stroker.

2 - As the factory starter is mounted on your passenger side..this is a conversion to a right steer car so I can't use it on that side...the steering box is in the way.

3 - Not sure about this - but if I did try to use the factory item on your drivers side............wouldn't it spin the wrong way?

I didn't have to grind anything.... Dakota mini starter with 6.1 block
