What is the correct Clutch Disc & Pressure plate to use for a 64 Dart 273 4-speed w/3:23 gears
Someone put one in but when it is revved up or going fast sometimes it makes a loud noise until you let off or depress clutch in.
What gives. Heard 273 and new clutch assemblies are not that great.

I don't know about your noise, but, the stock 9 1/2" clutch was adequate for a 273 2bbl, but, not great for higher performance. I like to use the one that comes on a B-series van with a slant 6. It fits the flywheel using Allen head bolts and provides more friction area. The pressure plate has a better design too that is easy to add springs for higher clamping pressure depending on how much horsepower you have. Keep in mind that if you make it a lot stiffer, you may need to beef up the linkage and Z-bar to handle the extra load.

When he purchased the Dart it was changed to a 4-bbl with no problem and many years ago the clutch had no noise, must have been the original clutch. Since them someone worked on the Dart, and not a good thing. A change was done 6 years ago and has the noise now. No one knows what was put in there. Maybe a worn pilot shaft bearing and or bushing or just not the correct clutch
Thanks Bob

If it bolted to the flywheel, it's almost certainly the correct clutch, or one that will work anyway. I don't know of any others that will bolt on there except for the one I recommended. This is assuming that it's using the stock cast iron bell housing and stock flywheel.

So I finally got to remove the Transmission in the Dart. What I found is a 122 tooth flywheel and what looks like a very small disc and pressure plate at 9.25 inches. Anyone with more info to help with this.
Thanks Bob

that would be correct for a 64 dart with a V8

what other info are you looking for?

If you find the right clutch set, you can get a 10" clutch on that 9 1/2" flywheel.

If I remember right (been fifty years), the four barrel cars used a slightly bigger clutch disc than the two barrel cars, 9.5 vs. 9.25. Maybe a heavier duty pressure plate, too. I know my original clutch lasted 90,000 miles, but the two clutches put in by local shops didn't last long and would slip if I speed shifted. Found out they were putting in clutches that fit, but were barely adequate for six cylinders. I somehow got hold of an actual 273 four barrel clutch disc. By then, the correct pressure plate was no longer available, but Weber made a HD pressure plate for it, so that's what I used. Took a lot of muscle to hold the clutch in at a light, but it didn't slip when you speed shifted. even after I swapped the Commando 273 for a 340.

By the way, the factory Z-bar was barely strong enough for the stock clutch. Mine eventually ripped where one of the arms was welded to the cross shaft. That was before I put in the Weber clutch.

The clutch issue was one of the prime motivators for me to start doing my own mechanical work.

I switched to a 340 sized clutch in the late seventies, and that's what I've run since. But if you want to keep your original 9.5 inch bellhousing, Brewer's has HD clutch setups that will fit an original early A four-speed car. Oops - might should have looked at prices before posting the link. Wow!

Here's the story about my 10 inch. (Peeps, get your brains out of the gutter, it's not THAT 10 inch!)

As of today, I've been running the 10" clutch from Brewer's Performance described just above by 65 Cuda 340. Works likes a champ. Even spoke to Brewer himself over the phone for a few minutes about the adjustment. He described it in a way that sixth grader could understand. Been in the car for 500+ miles now behind a softly upgraded 273 Commando and it bites good!

Yup. That's it. That allows the 10" clutch and pressure plate on the 9.5" flywheel. It works good. I have the same thing in Vixen right now and I have the same thing for the Ford T5 transmission when I make that swap.

Right you are, RRR, the 10" fits nicely. If you go to my earlier post, you can see the actual tape measure on the components that I probably didn't need to sell and it should help future owners with a clutch selection.

I don't see the conversion clutch listed on Brewer's site but they have new style clutches that are supposed to fit and can handle a lot of power. Anyone looking for a performance clutch you should contact Brewer's.

10 clutch from a slant six out of a b body will bolt right up to flywheel. rock auto has them.

Old hot rod buddy of mine told me he had to reinforce the firewall because it flexed so much with a heavier clutch in his 65. And he was a little guy, like 5'4"

did you inspect the components and were able to ascertain where the sound or problem was coming from or are you just blindly ordering parts to throw at it and hope that corrects the issue?

order judiciously, compatibility issues are very real and not everything plays nice together-- even when the part numbers and online catalog say that it should work.

good luck.
