I had a Digital Mitutoyo with Carbide jaws for a bit, when the screen went nuts I went back to Dials. The quick and dirty, and CHEAP, measuring tool is a digital caliper. I was a machinist, so I preferred a dial caliper, but a digital is very useful, should be in any engine assemblers box.
But I can't do without my 2-3 mic for crank journals, and 4-5 mic for pistons,(your 273 would need a 3-4, ) and a dial bore gauge for bearings and bores. I've put engines together before without them...... but I know better now.
If you don't have any of the above, head over to HF for a digital caliper today.
I love my Starrett mics, but my two favorites are a mitutoyo four inch dial, and a helios 13" dial . And an indicator without a mag base is almost useless.I had a Digital Mitutoyo with Carbide jaws for a bit, when the screen went nuts I went back to Dials.
I only have 1-2" Mics right now So, it looks like a 2-3, a 3-4 and a Bore Gauge are in my very near future. Prolly not from HF tho. Lol
A have a couple of Starrett Indicators but not a Mag Base at the moment...
Thanks Man I'll get on the Stick this week!
