Compression Ring End Gap

I actually have a nice quiet, good-running engine...
it just used too much oil and smoked.
That's why I pulled it apart, I thought I'd be able to do the work without the aid of a high-priced shop.
I'm not looking for Track Time just turn key on the weekends ya know?

Always sounded really good...

That is what a dial bore gauge is good for: checking 'roundness'.

If you have a decent touch with a 2-3"micrometer, you can get an idea of journal size and roundness. I don't think a high dollar tool is necessary, you are looking for comparison readings, not absolute accuracy.
A dial bore gauge is for measuring the inside of a circle, calipers and micrometers for the outside of a circle.
As for your engine, if the bores aren't completely wasted, funnel shaped, and are still standard, I would get the correct rings. The ones you have are clearly trashcan fillers. I would measure the crank journals, get some new bearings, and put it together.
(It's a 273, I wonder if Chevy 265 rings got used cause they were "close enough", and available?)

The quick and dirty, and CHEAP, measuring tool is a digital caliper. I was a machinist, so I preferred a dial caliper, but a digital is very useful, should be in any engine assemblers box.
But I can't do without my 2-3 mic for crank journals, and 4-5 mic for pistons,(your 273 would need a 3-4, ) and a dial bore gauge for bearings and bores. I've put engines together before without them...... but I know better now.
If you don't have any of the above, head over to HF for a digital caliper today.

I had a Digital Mitutoyo with Carbide jaws for a bit, when the screen went nuts I went back to Dials.
I only have 1-2" Mics right now So, it looks like a 2-3, a 3-4 and a Bore Gauge are in my very near future. Prolly not from HF tho. Lol
A have a couple of Starrett Indicators but not a Mag Base at the moment...
Thanks Man I'll get on the Stick this week!

I love my Starrett mics, but my two favorites are a mitutoyo four inch dial, and a helios 13" dial . And an indicator without a mag base is almost useless.
The hf rec for a digital is for those of us that have nothing. Not meant as an insult to you!
