which 1 to buy? I bought it in 1989 and it is a 5 hp A. O. Smith. Found a couple online, Man are they expensive. Going to have this 1 rebuild for spare for my other comp. Just want to get 1 put back on asap. Any suggestions?
You're going to buy a new motor and "rebuild" your old 5HP motor to have as a spare? I don't know about prices where you are, but that wouldn't make any sense at all down here.
Unless it just needs bearings it will not be economical to rebuild. I just priced out new motors recently…very expensive. Make sure you get the same frame size and rpm.
The rule of thumb was $100 per horsepower complete rebuild cost vs new. As said if it is just bearings and you do it yourself Cheap. Our shop recycles pretty much everything 5 horse and below unless it's just bearings. It's generally cheaper to buy a new low horsepower motor.
I went through this a few years ago. What is the typical motor class for a compressor? Open Drip Proof (ODP). What usually dies on an ODP single phase integral HP motor? The starting switch. What does it die from? Air-borne contaminants.
As a shop is always dusty, against the advice of everyone , I went with a TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) motor to protect the starting switch. So far so good.
