So I've got to rant! Me and the wife went to buy a newer car for her. We found something she liked at a local dealership, but they refused to sell the car to us, because they would loose money on the deal. What do you guys think of this. This is a condensed version of it all from a email I sent to the owner of the dealership.

"My wife and I went and test drove a 2014 Dodge Journey on Saturday 7/11/15. We went in to buy it on 7/13/15. We spent a hour and half negotiating a value for our trade in with Ryan one of the Managers and came to a agreement. When it came down to the purchase price, we had a hard copy of a Craigslist ad for a lower price on the same car and same VIN #. Which is dated 7/13/15. Ryan refused to sell us the car at the price it was advertised on Craigslist for. He said he would only sell it to us for the higher sticker price and not the online price, because he was unaware of the online ad. He said he does not list vehicles on Craigslist, but called the number on the ad and a Fury Dealership answered, confirming it was a good price.

We asked him to write up the purchase agreement with the online price and our negotiated trade in price but he refused. Ryan told us he had to talk to some people at the South St. Paul location and would call us back on 7/14/15. We spent 3 hours trying to purchase the car and were handed our keys and told no deal would be made. We left in our own truck feeling we had been kicked out and very upset and confused over their business practices.

I had not heard from Ryan during the day so I called the Stillwater dealership at 4pm on 7/14/15 and got his voicemail. I left a message asking him to return my call but have yet to hear anything.

I would like to discuss why he refused to sell us a car at a advertised price and agreed upon trade in. If you could call me back to discuss this further it would be appreciated."

So what do you guys think of all this?

Strange indeed.

We just bought a new ride for the bride.. What a teeth pulling task. We test drove a Journey as well, and I didn't like it at all, it felt "cheap" to me. It may just have been the particular car, I hope they aren't all like that.

you were cutting into the many thousands of $ made on new cars !!

Im thinking that the sales rep is pretty confidemt and its a staring contest now. Is something else available at another dealership?

The salesman negotiated your trade thinking you were buying the newer car at the higher stickered price...When you sprung the craigslist price on him he couldn't make the deal.

Sorry to hear. I hate buying cars at the stealership :eek:ops: They ALWAYS play games IMO

You're the customer. You're always right. F them. Lots of people want to sell cars, very few buying them. Take it or leave it. Your money's good elsewhere...

I think you're a very savvy shopper and the dealership got caught. I think they should honor the price in the ad, period. Dealerships get away with crap like this all the time.

A couple of years ago my wife bought a car and we asked about the "free TV" from the ad. The salesman said that's just for the ad, we don't have any TV's. We really didn't want it so we didn't push, but it's the principle...

Yup. They tried it with me on our recent purchase (today). When I looked at the vehicle yesterday, I told the salesman I wanted a few things addressed. One of them was turn the rotors (all four) and install new pads all the way around.

They turned the rotors and installed the old pads. :banghead: Probably figured I wouldn't notice.

They told me they did, I asked the sales manager, "how many NEW pads have you seen that have rusted rivets on them". Idiots

Sooo...I made them put it in writing they will replace the pads as I requested before signing any papers. Now the wife has to go back next week to get it done.

IMO there are no rules to this game they play. My trade in is valued at X amount of money and they should not screw someone out of said money. I dont care if your buying a $5000 car or a $100k car. Just because I know the games they play your right I had ammo in my pocket to get the best deal for us. Which I did, and they lost money. I dont believe that is my problem.

We are not set on this car, and yes there are other dealerships I will go to. But I will not recommend this dealership to anyone and I will bad mouth them all over if they choose not to honor there price. I'll wait to hear from possibly the owner, manager or saleman today.

Actually no. Not on new cars. I worked for a Toyota dealer many years ago, not as a salesman but as a inventory control specialist. I handled all orders on lot cars and any special orders. I can tell you this, on a say 50,000 dollar car, the factory, whether that's GM, Ford, Dodge etc, is going to get at least 47,000 or roughly 95 %, that leaves the dealer 3,000 in which the salesmen get their stipend. Now this is where it gets a little tricky, but of that 47,000, once the car sells, 30 days later, the factory will issues a bonus check to the dealership, usually 1-2 percent of the price. So take a salesmen's pay, usually 3 to as much as 5 %, a bonus of 1-2 percent and you're looking at maybe making 2 or 3,000 profit dollar profit. Course that's not counting the dealer and document fees they tack on (which i can't stand) and you can probably push that number to 4-5k.

Now, this will really make you mad:

USED CARS.

Everyone now a days say to not buy new and to buy used.....yeah as a consumer you're gonna save money but as a dealer, they WANT, they LOVE, they go to bed at night praying you buy used. Why, well back to math:

Using a 50,000 dollar car. That is the retail value of the car when new. Say it's a 2013 model, low miles, good condition, needs no freshening or mechanical work. So resell retail is say 42,500. Dealers operate on what's called nada black book, not blue book which you always hear about. I can explain the differences but that's another lesson. What they give on trade in would probably be 65 to 75%(for vehicles within couple years of new in excellent shape, obviously the worse shape or more work it needs, this figure will drop to as low as 25% of the resell value or even go wholesale which is worse yet) of the resell retail value. Most of what I saw was they started at the 65% mark in negotiating. So we're run with that. so roughly 27,500. They would then set a price, near that top dollar resell retail value, but they'll stay 1-2 grand under it for a couple reasons, 1, it gives them the line, we're advertising already under book value, you'd be surprised the number of people this line stops from asking for a lower price, and 2, this allows them to tack on those extra dealer fees and still get a bank to approve it quickly and easily (banks don't like approving vehicle much over resell value).

So now we're at say 40,000 for that vehicle, paid 27,500 for it. 12,500 difference, now say it sells for 39,500, leaves us 12,000, remember that figure, salesmen gets their 3% of the sale price(1200ish), now we're done to 10,800, now the dealer tacks on a 1000 dollar doc fee, back to 11,800. That's all profit to the dealer as the factory gets nothing on a used car sale. That's where the dealer makes their money.

I left that business after I learned all that, dealers pay their employees crap wages, almost as bad as walmart, I had it figured out once, my hourly rate being 9.25 an hr(not ban while I was in college that year), the number of cars i processed a day, accounted for roughly 35 cents a car, dealer had 32 hourly staff, 11.20 a car is what the dealer was out.

And if you really want to get even more upset, ask me about how they rape customers on the parts and service side.........its even worse. Car dealerships are pure rip offs, I'd rather go to a local one than a franchise dealer

I worked at a Buick/GMC dealer for 13 years. The most effective thing you can do to get what you want is get up and walk out. They hate that. They know there's many other places to buy cars.

They over valued the trade to blow sunshine you know where. If the ad were mentioned at the beginning your trade value would have been less.

Buy from a private party....the only reason to go to the dealership is if you like it rough. :D

If it were me I wouldn't give them my business now...I'd leave some scathing reviews wherever I could and file a complaint with the BBB.

I would contact the state. They may be legally bound to honor the price, I know in Michigan they are.

Sad but true.....tried to buy a truck from Earnhardt. I got so ticked off I went outside. Ernie managed to get them to agrees to our terms. I went back to sign the papers and they back pedaled....then had the nerve to call us half a dozen times, trying to get us to sign the papers....

Yep, you busted them at their own game.

We like to agree on a cash price first, then asses any potential trade.

That way you get an honest offer on the trade.

Well here is a update.

They manager Ryan called me today appologizing for all the problems and not being able to sell me the car on Monday night. He stated he just needed answers from his supervisors and how to proceed.

He honored the online price, gave me the trade in value we agreed upon and also gave me dealer cost for a 2nd key fob, since they didn not have a 2nd key for the car.

So it all worked out in the end for us and we got a hell of a deal on a car.

Cool they hooked you up.

The second key deal is really weird, we didn't get one either, they have to get us one. Good thing too, 245.00 for a stinkin' key.

NICE!!!!!! Glad they honored their word. Too bad a person has to go through so much to get what you should have gotten from the start.

Ya, the key for the journey was $350. So Im happy only paying $150 for it. Which I told them when I was there on Monday. That I would pay for a new key if they wrote up the contract. I guess it was nice of them to give me a break on it for all the crap.

At least I got them to cover mine totally. What color is the Journey? Don't tell me it is the sorta burnt orange.
