Automobile restoration is the process of repairing the degraded aspect of a car to return it to an overall "authentic" condition. To renovate a car without updating or upgrading it by keeping in line with how it would have appeared when first offered for sale. Non factory paint codes and even paint schemes, interior and chrome trim of the time period may be used if they were commonly shared between similar models of the era so as to look the part. Many restored cars may lose their original engines and have a similar capacity or model related engine installed.
A complete restoration includes not only repair of the parts that can be seen – the body, the trim, the chrome, the wheels, the dash board and accessories and the passenger’s compartment – but the parts that are not necessarily visible or otherwise evident, including the engine and the engine compartment, the trunk, the frame, the driveline, and all ancillary parts like the brakes, accessories, engine cooling system, electrical system, etc.[1] Besides repairs done to correct obvious problems, repairs are also done for cosmetic reasons. For example, even if a wheel is covered by a hub cap and not seen, and is structurally sound, it should have the tire unmounted, then any required repairs such as rust removal, straightening, priming and painting.

nice Duster but I am not sure that it falls under the above definition

fenderwell headers and sheet metal door panels are not in the definition of restoration. that word has become the word to describe anything with krylon on it.

It's all about interpretation.Rebuilt, renew remanufacture???You need to give the guy credit,he did a great job-not one that I would like but,his goal was not the same as mine.

ask 99 people and you will get 99 different definitions

my definition is getting the car fixed up with a decent paint job driveable with a good performing engine i can go to the beach if i want, cruise around town, fetch coffee. i will probably just stay out of walmart parking lots however. my kid had my jeep wrangler at walmart once came out someone went up the side with their car and took the mirror off! and left the scene of course haha

To me, the definition of a "restoration" is to return the vehicle to a condition at a certain point in time. To restore it "like new" is to bring the car back to when it rolled off the assembly line. To restore a race car would be to return it to it's race condition at whenever point you decide. Same with a custom show car, movie car, or specialty build. Throwing a paint job and new interiror in a car is not in itself a restoration regardless of how nice it looks. It seems people use that term way too much when they actually mean renovation, refreshening, customization, modification, upgrading, etc.
