Did Norton antivirus ever screw up your computer?

ok so I’m running windows 7 home premium.
I have Norton internet security as wall as malware bytes.
I got this pop up from Norton sayin because of the Data beaches lately that I could use their new tool to scan the dark for my email address to so if I was compromised.
As soon as I clicked OK my computer slowed to a crawl, never got any status box to show it was doing anything. Can’t even open a .jpg without it taking like a minute for it to open. Try to open internet explorer, takes a minute to get a window. And it never loads.
I have powered off and rebooted, tried rebooting into safe mode and running system restore to an earlier date.That failed cause it said it couldn’t find a file. I’m now in safe mode running a scan with malware bytes. Wife’s computer which is on the same network is acting the same. I shut hers down till mine is fixed, but I’m getting no where fast.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the pop up that you activated was not actually a from a Norton site. I also use a Norton Antivirus program, I only use updates are from the Norton site linked to the Norton Antivirus icon on my desktop.
Norton has a phone line help desk,

I retired from AT@T, in the internet business, trouble shooting customers computers. What you describe with Norton is common. I believe,with years of experience, that the "Anti Virus" company's, do indeed propagate viruses. Who needs to pay for anti virus protection if there are no attacks on your computer? Hundreds of computers trouble shot over 20 years of investigating. IMO, Remove Norton and use the one Microsoft gives for free. Windows Defender. BUT remove Norton, IMO you are better off with nothing.
 
Ok guess I’ll try norton phone support next.

I already did a scan with norton while in safe mode. It actually found a virus called trogan.Gen.npe, and quarantined it. Then I tried the system restore again, still says if failed because it couldn’t find a file.
If I start the computer normally something is still hitting the hard drive constantly making it impossible to do anything
 
We had Norton for a few years without any hiccups other than for some reason we would have to reinstall it because of "outdated" voodoo b.s....
I think you need a computer guy to scan n fix it.
 
I switched to Comodo years ago and was very happy with it until I got this new win10 laptop and the version for it is limited trial period free and blocks access without exception from any site it decides it doesn't like so it had to go , I'm running Defender on the system and using a secure browser with a built in VPN { Opera } when I surf outside of known sites like FABO .
 
I installed Mc Afee in my new lap top 6 years ago and she's still crisp and fast I put it in my phone also around the same time it's still snappin to .
 
Maybe try Microsoft itself. I think it's called Malicious Software Removal Tool. Try booting in Safe Mode and go there and give it a shot. What do you have to lose? If all else fails you could go to restore to factory settings, provided your hard drive has the OS in a separate partition. Here is the link for the Microsoft site. Bad thing is you lose all you have on the hard drive.......

Ok, very strange turn of events on Saturday.
So the Trojan that I found and removed with Norton was not the real problem. After removing that the computer wouldn't allow you to do anything, running so slow, then locking up.
Well two things I noticed, I kept seeing a message from Malwarebytes that my realtime protection was off, I would try to turn it back on, and it would go right back off. And what was happening with the computer was that something was using huge amounts of memory, eventually it would get to 99% usage and the thing would hang.
After re-running virus scans with malwarebytes, and Norton, while in safe mode, and finding nothing. I let it set most of the day.
That evening I got online on my phone and searched for people having the same problems. and I found several. Turns out that Saturday morning, Malwarebytes sent out an update that was corrupt, and it was causing the high memory usage and screwing up the realtime protection. By that evening they had admitted the problem, and had put out a newer update that fixed the problem. So after restarting malwarebytes and letting it update again, it fixed everything.

So if anyone is running malwarebytes, go to settings - about - and make sure you have update package V1.0.3803 or higher. If not, update it now.
 
Good news! Glad you got it fixed.
 
I just removed the new MalwareBytes package from my Lappy it was false flagging everything , it used to be just an on demand scan tool but they expanded into real time control and no thanks for me .I still use Spybot search and destroy but I guess I need to chat with our local expert as to what he recommends -Hey Trailbeast where are ya on this ?

For years now I believe a person is going to get infected through trickery, or some other way at one point or another no matter what, and most who claim to have never been infected with some sort of crapware or virus, either have a charmed life with computers, wouldn't know an infection even if they got tricked into it, or just don't do much on the computer anyway.

In the OP's specific recent situation I would clear the browser, check the browser add on's list and clear windows temp files then make sure my Malwarebytes was actually working.:D

Anymore it's more cost effective and less of a headache to use a phone or a throw away tablet device of some sort, and just keep your important stuff on a separate device.
