I wanted to "like it" say "thanks" and "agree"!! (don't worry, it'll never happen again!)Since it would be so easy I'll let it go.
Just pull the dang tube, kick it's *** and put it back in.
Show it who's boss.

It was at the full mark.Add beer to the equation.
What was the level on the stick when you pulled it?
Can you SEE the tube all the way into the block?
Bent the tip but didn't make any difference.Almost all dip tubes have a ridge right at the end on the inside of them from the cutting process.
Just bend the tip a little.
Remember, I wrote above that I am able to insert a plastic rod that is almost the same length as dipstick without any problem.do stock type 340 pans have baffles? how far in are you able to get it? I have found on more than one occasion that the lead edge of the dipstick can catch on the edges of a baffle.
Steve, you thinking the dipstick is hitting the crank?
The tip is rounded at the end.does the tip have a mostly squared tip? if so, maybe try filing the corners off of it - round off the tip
Steve, you thinking the dipstick is hitting the crank?
wasn't that a stroker crank that actually ate part of the dipstick?Yes there was a post here recently where dipstick was hitting crank. Anything's possible? ?
This the 1st time you pulled it out?
wow! a lot of remarks , but no help, even tho some were funny as h--l. bend the dipstick w/ pliers a hair toward the inside of the engine. does it have a windage tray in it? could be hanging up on it, a stud girdle, or even the pan gasket.---ask me how I know !Since it would be so easy I'll let it go.

I believe all 340 LA motors had windage trays. I did not rebuild motor, so can't say for sure if mine has one or not.does it have a windage tray in it? could be hanging up on it, a stud girdle, or even the pan gasket.---ask me how I know !
The plastic rod I mentioned that slides right in is flat (not tapered) at the bottom, so I don't know if your idea would help, but thanks.Make the tip of the dipstick pointy-er.

The mystery is how I can insert a plastic rod and it goes in smoothly without hanging up. Makes no sense,
and it seems this will remain a mystery.
I appreciate all the input.
The handle doesn't even get close to the tube. Dipstick goes in a bit over halfway and then stops.Just a thought here.... could it be the handle end of the dipstick is catching on the top of the tube, as opposed to the tp getting hung up at the bottom?
Once it goes in a few inches, there is no way to rotate. The guy you got it from put it in, you saw it in, so we know it fits. I've had dipsticks in some cars that had to be rotated as the dipstick was inserted, or there would be a catch. I don't know where else to go with this.......
ya know - - they make a lube for that!!Once it goes in a few inches, there is no way to rotate.
X2 on all of it - - -- pfffft - too GDed funny!! I love you man!!All I can say is if it was mine Ida smashed the ever loving **** outta something by now. As I told her. I got it in once its going in again...you just pick the hole
