Distributor cap issue

-
I’m fairly certain the distributor is actually factory. It’s the same color as the original block paint and the wiring and stuff just seems so old. So there’s a ground that also comes off the coil that I think acts as a ground? It bolts up under the coil mounting bracket. Now my intake is aluminum. Does this affect anything?

You have a dwell meter? Have you checked points resistance? Most dwell meters have a scale/ function for doing so. How IS the dwell and where do you have it set?

I would pull the dist. Wiggle the shaft and look at the points open/ closed on various cylinders. Is there some point at which the points either will not open or will not close? Use a test lamp for doing so

SINGLE points distributors ground the points through the pivot on the advance plate. DUAL point have ball bearing plates and must have a separate ground pigtail from the plate to the dist.

Dist to block grounding is no issue unless the clamp is so loose the distributor "flops"

Coil is not grounded. The can being grounded probably adds some radio noise shielding, but the actual coil circuit is not grounded

Aluminum intake is not an issue

Also, points ignition MUST have a good condenser. "New" does not equate to "functional"

That's a fact. I once tuned up my friend's 67 Impala w/283. It ran great afterwards, except it would just stall intermittently for seemingly no reason. After scratching my head for awhile, trying to get it to repeat the symptom for me, I just replaced the condenser: problem solved. Now the symptoms the OP has are much different, but still valid point.
OP said it's been sitting for some time, and 67dart273 just touched on it. Maybe there is a grounding problem, dist to block. Maybe rust, grease, paint, etc are preventing a good solid ground.

The new condensers are junk over half the ones I have bought failed when testing them hot I just use nos or none. Also if the distrib is painted make sure the clamp is pinching it for the ground.

No ground on the coil if there is a loose wire it was for another condenser for radio noise they can go bad also and short out.
