If you are not actually driving it and breaking it in, you can run a bunch more total timing. If you are breaking in camshaft, get it started, up to 2000 rpm and dial in the timing to 36-40 degrees timing to keep exhaust temps down. Not going to hurt anything as there is no load on the engine. If it's a roller cam, none of that break in stuff applies.

The initial and mechanical advance make up the total timing. Springs apply the curve.

Set it up and be done with it for initial fire up and run in. Once you are done, then fine tune it for the engine/chassis which is not going to be the same in every case for the same engine in a different car.

You seem to follow Don, Follow Don. A set up at 18/34 would likely be safe in most cases running premium level fuel. This is not rocket science and doesn't require a great deal of thought. There is a saying that likely applies... Paralysis by analysis!
