driveshaft woes

I attempted to change my u-joints earlier today with little success and decided to cut my losses by going to a local shop.

The shop ran into two problems.
1. The yoke is worn and need to be replaced. So besides buying new, where can I find one? Are there some junkyard vehicles that will work?(904 tranny). Ideally i'd like to avoid brand new so i'm not buying a second new yoke when i do a 4spd swap.

2. The rear mounting flange on the driveshaft would bend whenever I or the shop tried to press in the u-joint caps. We confirmed they are the right u-joints. Any ideas on how to correct this?

question 1. search the for sale ads here, on www.moparts.com www.racingjunk.com etc... You can also post a want in on this board in the cars and car parts want ad forum.

question 2. Sorry I mis-read your question and thought you said you couldn't get the old one out. As 67 said you either have the wrong u-joint, or a damaged yoke.

It should not take that much force to install a joint. I usually use a vise and some sockets. I've even TAPPED them in with a hammer and a socket for a driver

Either you have a joint that is mis - boxed, or the yoke is somehow damaged. The old one came out, right?

The joint is the right one. It just happened that the shop i went to was a machine shop thats in the local napa auto parts store. So we were able to double check it with another u-joint. Also, the guy was able to test fit the caps into each of the holes.

The old one did come out with no hiccups.

Just use new stuff why would you dick around with stuff that hasn't been in production for more than 30 years?
Use new weld yokes in 1310 or 1330 series if you have 7260 or 7290 and use the corresponding joints which would be 5-355 or 5-796.

Id go to a real driveline shop to before i let a napa china shop do anything, you're in cali there are tons of big truck shops that can do it for you

I have a spare driveshaft that came with the car that i'm not using. I don't know if its for 904 or not, but its the one that will bolt to the transmission end rather than slipped into the spline.

That won't work. No 904 had a bolt on rear yoke. Only 727's and manual trans. had that in HD truck or motorhome apps. Cars have to have a slip yoke. Trucks and motorhomes that used a bolt on yoke on the trans. had a 2 piece driveshaft with a slip yoke in the middle.

Read it again. He's not talking about a REAR yoke, he's talking about the early FRONT "ball and trunnion" setup.

No, that won't work. Mainshaft in the trans is different, and those ball and trunnion joints are expensive to maintain.

OK, I see. Since he said he didn't know what it came off of and it bolted on I thought he was talking about a HD truck style.
