On my 72 dart I would like to know how far out the tips should be. Currently with what I believe is the factory hole for the insulator the tips extend out to almost flush vertically with the bumper, so would this be correct. The factory hole for the insulator is it threaded or does it use a self tapping bolt.
Thanks

post a pic? lots of tips out there claiming to be for that application but are too long.

The insulator mount is bolted to the frame using a bolt and u-nut clip attached to the frame. I bought these for my '72

I would love it if these stuck out about 2" less but these are much shorter the original set I bought from PG Classic

The ones I have are from pypes. Is there a source out there for the u nut and bolt.

I think your hanger bracket is back too far to use the factory bolt location and not have them stick out by a mile! there may be a round hole in the frame at about that location where you could use a washer and a nut and bolt though.

The u-nut and bolt look like this

I modified an old fender mounting nut and bolt, fits perfect
. Here is one side mocked up using the factory hole, does stick our quite a ways might need to move it in 2-3 inches and use a self tapping bolt

Heres my 70 with the correct factory tips, be careful when selecting tips, cause many people put the longer tips on thinking they are correct, when they are actually not, mine too had the longer ones on when I bought her.

Here is how mine ended up using factory mounting, out a little farther than I would like. These are from pypes 2.5 in.

Just to be clear, while these are the kind of tips that Accurate Limited and other sell as correct for 1970 Darts - THEY ARE NOT LIKE THE FACTORY TIPS!!! which have a short "bullet" and a long box. Layson's recently started selling correct repops. I took an original to their warehouse and compared them with their repops and they are very close, with the length of the whole tip and the length of the box and the location of the welded L-shaped bracket right one target. Here are pics of the correct original tips, which allows only the long box to extend beyond Valance. Why are these 70 Dart (and 68-9 Barracuda) tips different than any other A-body tip? Because they are the only 67-76 A bodies with a Valance under the back bumper.

Last but not least are the repops on my Darts from a company that no longer exists that show them installed with correct placement (Note - my spring are moved in 3/4 of an inch which required me to move the tips in 3/4 of an inch using the factory hangers and attachment points spaced in 3/4 of an inch)

If you want to use the incorrect tips, this is as close as I could get to correct using a factory hanger, but the rich exhaust during warm up still deposits black soot on the white valance...
