Did they make them in 318 ports or did they just slap a 360 intake on it? Was it that bad for port mismatch?

The 360 Intake ports are too big for the 318 heads . It will run rich and be dogey. I recommend rebuilding a set of 360 heads, and change both. Keep the carb size down, in the 550-625 range, and That 318 will really come to life!

Huh? rebuild 360 heads, change both (intake I presume) and that 318 will come to life..so use 360 heads and intake..and lose quite a bit of compression?

To answer the question, (because I read it!)

The 318 received the 360 intake and heads from Mom MoPar.

The above is correct. The cop 4 bbl 318 had 360 heads and intake until roughly 85-86? Then it was switched to the 302 head with small chambers and ports, and I would assume the intake for those was matched.I dont know...

Had a Dodge D100 1978 with a 318 4 barrel thermoquad...back in the 80s...dont know what heads it had on it..

Sorry, I should clarify I was referring to The 318 engines I use that are pre 1970 with 9.2 compression. not the 8.0 1970' and newer type. The 70's got worse mileage, and were slower than the 67-69. I owned a brand new 69, and a 70. Think about the 71 340, with 9.5. and 2.02, even bigger than a 360 head. the later engines got smogged up beginning in 1970. In my opinion, larger ports and slightly larger valve sizes don't hurt anything. 318 engines have the same stroke as a 340, but a flatter piston. if you look at a 69 318 piston and a 71 340 9.5 you can hardly see the difference. a 69 318 will out run any 70 and newer 318 in the same car. now a 273, you would lose a lot of low end. I put this combo on my 68'charger with stock 340 Intake, and 68 340 exhaust. That car ran like a million bucks. I stock all the 67-69 engines I can find, for this reason. my brother was so torqued back in 1974 that my 69 273 dart would run with the 70 318 as fast as he wanted to go, and not beat me. 18-20 mpg too.:profilel:

In 1983 I ordered a dodge pu d150 with a 318 4bl from the factory it ran excellent. I cant remember what carb, intake or heads were on it but it worked well. I think that was the last year for it on trucks.

..........I have swapped on many 340-360 4bbl intakes on to 318s with absolutely not 1 problem, all ran like a champ.......I've had ppl tell me that the late 70s 318 4bbl trucks had the small ports, but I have never actually seen 1...........kim.....

Isn't that the truth? I think some people around here are either blind, or failed English comprehension.....miserably.

It was not. Not if it was a 4bbl. Chrysler never made a 4bbl small port intake for the 318.

I think the later 318 4 barrel manifolds were all large port, 340 / 360. With or without 360 heads. As oldkimmer said, the port mismatch was always sited, but in reality, the big port intakes worked fine on the small port heads. Chrysler even used them OEM. The only small port 4 barrel intakes were 273 or Marine.

I have heard the same and like you have never seen one. You're right though. All the hooha about mismatched ports I think is much ado about nothing. .....and here come the arguments.

I put a factory intake on my original318.got it off an 80s something truck.it had the small thermostat.it worked great with a eddy 1406 and with a holley 1850.eddy got a little better mileage holley had more power......

Cool, I got a 360 intake and the matching TQ. Now well see if the 273 likes a TQ! In all reality, im gonna turbo charge this (Holset HX35) through the 2bbl intake, ported all the way out to the studs and run a Ford 4.6 elbow/TB off the top. Will run the turbo off a flange off the top of the passenger log and tie the driver outlet into the passenger inlet, RV style. Best place for a turbo as there is nothing there. I got nothing in this except the $1 273, turbo rebuild kit and time...so far.

If it is the small primary TQ, it'll be fine.
