Does anyone have a recommendation for a hard copy of a FSM for a 1972 Plymouth Duster?
I am not interested in a free downloaded one. I don't want it on my computer, I don't want to print anything out. I like books so I want a hard copy of it.
Years ago the wife bought me one for my 1970 Charger and it has been a great asset.

This is NOT A WANT TO BUY ad, I'm looking for sources that sell a FSM that is as complete as can be.
Feel free to PM me if you want. Thank you.

I have several from Faxon Auto Literature. I am most pleased with them. They have originals sometimes but mine are reprints. I'm with you. Give me a book over a monitor any day.

Faxon ruins their prints with their watermark. I bought one, never doing that again. The watermark is so heavy on some of the pictures you can’t see the original details that make the pictures useful.

Best bet for the hardcopy FSM is to find a used one on eBay. Or maybe start a wanted ad here, maybe someone’s got an extra they’ll part with.

Am I to understand that there are no direct reprints of originals? The "Faxon" books are copies that have watermarks that obscure some details?

All the Faxon books that I’ve seen have watermarks, they’re not direct reprints.

I’m sure there are direct reprints out there, I’ve just had decent luck finding used originals on eBay. Seems like the folks that had all that stuff are aging out, so it’s not hard to find. I have some originals because I also like having the hardcopy manual, but I also have the PDF’s because using a searchable PDF is super handy to find and navigate stuff.

My Faxon problem got fixed by the house fire. I agree, the water marks are terribly intrusive. I had what used to be the unobtainable factory internal assembly manual, coveted, guarded, and secretly stashed by the one and the great VIN checker himself.

See what Bishko has. I think they are the same folks whom I remember going to shows with big box truck packed with books new, used, and now reprints. Faxon has a lock on a few things like the assembly prints, but not everything. I have a AMC Jeep reprint from Faxon and there is no water mark but its copy paper, poor binding and was missing pages. The assembly drawing books the binding is better but the watermarks make it much harder to read.

I bought a real nice manual for my 64. It is so nice it looks like a copy but I can't find anything within the covers that would say it is.

It was $19.25.

Uh...

I just looked and was almost shocked what people are now wanting for OEM service manuals.

They are NOT $10-$20 anymore.

Closest I could find was a 74 and a 76 and both were Dodge.

Kern might try a "Motor" manual.

IMO next best and sometimes actually better than a FSM, plus it's a year range.

Pardon Our Interruption...

I saw that earlier. I lucked out finding mine for $20

Finding original Chrysler factory service manuals takes more time and effort now than it once did. ebay is a fair source. Thrift stores, flea markets, surplus dealers, and pawn shops can be another source. Online surplus book retailers used to have them, but a lot of those are gone. At one time, some public libraries had Chrysler factory service manuals on the shelves, and those could be purchased when surplused, but I doubt any are left.

Note that the 1972 model year Chrysler/Plymouth manual is a two volume set: Body Service Manual (document number 81-070-2150), and Chassis Service Manual (document number 81-070-2450). Often they are not sold together.

The following image shows the 1972 model year Chrysler/Plymouth manual set:

Note that alternate versions of the manuals were available for the Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest, and Chrysler Troubleshooting Contest. These are the same book, just with different covers. The following image shows a Chrysler Troubleshooting Contest chassis manual for 1974. This is a Dodge version.

A couple of the two volume sets at ebay are at the following links:

They are, unfortunately, pricier now.

I purchased my first Chrysler factory service manual direct from Chrysler in 1978 for $10. Then service manuals were available at $10 - $12.50 each for most from the current model year going back about 20 years. Similarly, owner manuals were available for $5. An order blank was in the back of any owner's manual. I bought several service and owner manuals. I also learned of the factory parts catalogs available, plus the heavy binders that dealers used and I got several. These were available, but not advertised to the public.

Since then, I have gathered service manuals and parts catalogs for all of my cars, and more, plus much Chrysler literature on multiple topics and vehicles, general Chrysler catalogs, Chrysler Service Highlights, Chrysler Technical Service bulletins, sales literature and a multitude of general automotive texts and manuals, aftermarket parts catalogs, etc.

I mostly do not buy reprints, but I have a couple of the early manuals that Year One provided. The print and diagrams were good, but the picture images were washed out some. The Torqueflite colored flow drawings are present. They used heavier paper, so the manuals are a little thicker, and their only marking added was inside the front cover.

The following images show most, but not all, of my Chrysler factory service manuals, Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) books, and factory parts catalogs, ranging from the late 50s into the 90s:

Yes, they are pricier than in 1979…

But in the early to mid 90’s they didn’t have them on computer nor reproduction.

Most were $40-60… 30 years ago!

So really they have gotten cheaper when you factor into inflation

For you to print them: A ream of 24lb paper is about $10. And about $20+ for least expensive binding. That’s if you can print double sided at home. Otherwise it will take two bindings and two reams of paper.

Just looked cause I could save you shipping at Fall Fling. But I don’t have an extra ‘72. Just have an extra ‘70. Q

We're fortunate that Barry has found and digitized so many of the TSB on the Hamtramck Historical Library. Those could be difficult to find even at a dealer. There was one in Livingston NJ, name escaping me now, that had the '67 parts book supplements for the Baracuda. The other dealerships in the area didn't have them.
