Last night on the Roku box I watched (sort of) a group of guys who built old style rods and drove them to the salt. One of them set a "then" record at about 188 with a Y block in a roadster,

.................so I looked it up.
Turns out "McTim" has been busy. This is the guy --Tim McMasters-- I came across some time ago that hand gone damn near 150 in a Ford unibody pu with a Y.

One of the older runs back in 012:

Now he's been back, and upped the record by quite a bit.........196.........

Lets see what that camper can do! My 312 ran like a Swiss watch, but the 351C I replaced it with was about 120HP better. The Ford-o-matic it was mated to was a little weird. 2 gear positions but a 3 sp. Put her in low and take off, shift to D and it'll shift into 2nd then you pull the shifter back down to Low to hold 2nd and then D for 3rd. I don't think it would go into first from 2nd gear manually.

I did not know that!!! Earlier Ford-O-Matics actually WERE 2 speed, just like a Powerglide

In Australia in the early 60s, as a hot rodder, you were King O' the Kids if you owned a Ford Customline, particularly the 59 Star Model. These were sold here in large numbers prior to the Falcon & had the 272 Y block. Chryslers & Chevs were more expensive, & were out of reach for most young blokes like me. My second car was a 59 Cusso [ that was the Aussie slang for the customline ] & performance was anemic...
