Im swapping over to floor shift and bought a column from a member here. I’m rebuilding it now. Is the shift tube on a floor shift model supposed to have a shift tube key? Seems on column there is a key and screw. Mine doesn’t so it lets the shift lever housing to move about 45 degree. Now remember we are working on a floor shift model so the shift lever housing is just the housing. Is this normal???

I.I.R.C., it can be dependent on what year you’re working on. We’ll need some details.

So mine doesn’t have the shift tube key like the picture. So the housing moves with in the slots. And I don’t remember if it did that before I took it apart.

Hey Tony,
Running into the same steering column issue on my 69 Charger 4spd car. Did you figure out if the shifter housing rotating is normal?

God I can’t remember! I know I took it apart and put it back together a few times. I thought it still moved. I put in the car and seems fine. One thing make sure the shaft is extended enough so the coupler reaches the box. I had to pull the column back out and put vice grips on the end of the shaft on a vice and tap it out about an inch. The inner shaft had collapsed a bit.

Thanks for the info. It seems strange that the part in question would rotate like that but I cannot see anything that looks like it would secure it. I guess I'll put it back together and see how it goes. Thanks for the fast reply.

Is there not a little hole in the bottom of that bell? A set screw in there? My memory fails. Sorry

I just had mine apart and was surprised there wasn't anything to secure it. No set screw or anything.

Yea, mine seems good too. Only issue is my tach is mounted to it. Still seems fine but it is weird being able to move it around. Oh well,
