Well another problem, I have is the fuel gauge not working at all. I have grounded the sender wire and the gauge pegs to full I have removed the sending unit and manually moved the float to register fuel on the gauge it will only go as far as 1/2, I also bought a new sender and measured the Ohms all within spec I think it was 86 on the high side + or - 12 ohms and on the low side 9 ohms + or - 2 ohms, any suggestions or am I missing something.

Think "end to end."

You started off right by test grounding the sender wire. This would imply that the wire, connectors, gauge, etc etc all work, but they may not be accurate. Set the sender by your ohmeter to a known test resistance, hook it up and to a GOOD ground and see if the thing works.

The sender may not be grounding at the tank. Find some way to attach a grounding pigtail direct to the sender, whether soldering a wire, or clamping one to the outlet port

See post no.2 for test resistances

Hey thanks for the advice I will definitely try that and I might just have to solder a ground to the sender I'll keep you posted.
