Garage Squad on Motor Trend TV

-
A program I would like to see involves the Hot Rod/Motor Trend folks. Set a total budget that is acceptable to the “Race of Lemons.”

Take Dulcich, Freiburg, Finnegan, Lucky, etc and divide into 3 teams. Each team has to find a car - not from their own stockpile or a gift from a friend/fan. Craigslist, local newspapers, wrecking yards, etc do vehicle source. Then prep it for a Race of Lemons or one of their rallies.

Show the cost (including the parts they have on hand) and work involved in car prepping the for the race, and show how they did. Sell the car after the race (end of the season), do it again the next season.

Seriously, who has the budget and parts just sitting on the shelf in their garage to buy a rust free A-Body, drop in a 500 HP engine, and then drop in a blower and a big Dominator carb and top of the line Mallory ignition they just happened to have sitting unused on the garage shelf. Include a pro built 9” rear, tub it, huge tires, etc.? Would be nice to know what that all cost - give people an idea what their dreams may cost them.

That’s why I like the Race of Lemons format. That would be more reality.

Sounds an awefull lot like a reboot of the British show "junkyard wars"

There was actually another one I remember watching where two teams were giving a budget to buy a car, and 3 days to build it, but I cant for the life of me remember what it was called

I had an idea for a show and sent it to a few people. Dennis Gage is the only one who responded and he said the idea needed more fake drama...
My guess is that WE are not the target audience for these shows.
WE know how to fix them, to modify them and how to race them.
These shows target the armchair enthusiast that may like cars but probably will never own a classic and likely wouldn't have the skills to restore one.
The average idiot seems to want the drama. The build up of tension leading into the commercial break keeps them engaged and tuned in.
Guys like us are the minority in this world.
Think I'm wrong?
How many gearheads are in your extended family?
I have exactly none. My brother-in-law likes Mopars but sold his Duster to me when he moved back east. Nobody in my extended family can rebuild an engine, paint a car, reskin a seat or even change their own oil.

^^^^Exactly. Building, restoring, or just anything requires work!!! too many fat lazy underworked overpaid "people" in this world today!???? Pass me another pizza!!

A guy in my shop complex is building a 24 hours of lemons car from a miata.

Apparently there are rules about what you can add and what you can take off.
Fairly strict. I want to say you can't spend more that $300 or something like that.
How they enforce that, I have no idea.

ROL cars have a $500 limit. You have to keep track of costs, but safety expenses do not count towards the $500. You can sell stuff off the car you won’t need to keep the costs down. If you hire mechanics, that is an expense.

Before the race, the cars are inspected for safety. If a car is challenged by the ROL over costs, the car is either disqualified or forfeited.

Their rallies are a bit different. Check ROL out online. All the rules, photos etc and race locations are there.

In essence, that is what Gage told me, but the show I had in mind (still have a "pilot" episode that's so old it's still in 4:3 TV format...) is more like Gage's show than the build shows, which actually bore me. If I want to see builds I will search out things that interest me on You Tube...

The Motor Trend channel has a marathon of Garage Squad going today. I've seen episodes from 2020 and maybe 2021?
Everyone wearing masks....

I see that stuff and it makes me think of a guy thinking back of all the skanky one night stands he had years ago....Memories that you tried to just put out of your mind.

I just watched the episode where they worked on the Daytona. Joe and Bruno both are professional race car drivers. Joe does most of his own work. Now they are working on a '69 roadrunner. One of the requirements is for the owner of the car and or a family member to be willing to help with the work on their own car / truck. I know this because I looked into it for our son inlaw.

Because they are ABSOLUTE HACKS. Nothing they do has quality to it. They simply thrash a car together and cut every corner they can. I tried watching the '67 Barracuda build. Terrible.
I contacted them in 2023 right before I started working on Bazza’s ‘71 VG. Someone from the show got in touch with me, and when all was said and done they said they wouldn’t take the car because, A) it wasn’t close enough to them, even though I told them I would haul it to my brothers place outside of Chicago, and B) They wouldn’t guarantee they would keep it as OEM as possible. Originality is a HUGE issue for Bazza, so even if they had accepted the car, he would have declined their invitation.

Hacks? I wouldn’t go that far, but after seeing all the corners they cut in their builds, I’m glad Bazza’s car wasn’t selected.

Can you and your team do better in the time frame allowed.

Bruno on Garage Squad always was the "boss" and did what??? really??? Just a blonde guy that thought he was a pretty boy star??? Dunno!!
Every TV car show "build" always seem to have a timeline, ie gotta be done by Fri. or else, or we will lose the shop if, etc. and I bet they do have a time restraint for filming, editing. They will add some drama as in the owner was supposed to have an engine, but NO!his is crap, and always some drama to add too the build drama. Then it was the human interest part of the show. Hollywood!!!! in Illinois!!! I usually refer to spending time watching as just mindless entertainment.

The car shows are about relating to a "personality" like [people do these days with maybe NASCAR. More than relating to the model?

I much rather watch some dude on on of the better UTube channels. Funny how things evolve. Frieberger has gone from numerous car mag editor jobs, to all the MotorTrend (deceased) RoadKill vids, to now a well watched UTube channel. There are a few smaller channels I like, and I do occasionally watch a UTube FriedBurger show, even though I always liked DullChic way better! Who wouid a guy want to drink a beer with? FriedBurgher or DullChic??? I say the DC hands down! a real builder.

To stream a car show :BangHead: :BangHead: :steering: :steering:     :drama:

I stand by my comments I made before.
Some of the car owners on the show look like the type of fair weather enthusiasts that couldn't change a spark plug by themselves. I can see the future for them...The car gets put together by this crew, they leave and a couple of weeks down the road, something simple happens and the car sits and sits and the cycle repeats.
I see able bodied dudes that may be great people but they are totally out of their element, they stand and watch everything get done or they hold the other end of a seat as one of the crew holds the other.
They'd be better off in a late model car with a warranty.
If a dude is handicapped or fell on financial hard times, shows like this are great. They may have the knowledge but lack the ability or the cash to get their dormant cars up and running.
