Yes, God only knows the hurt we suffer when we lose one of these friends, guardians, companions. But I have to always tell myself, no matter how hard, the immense hurt I feel, is so very small to the love and joy they give.
I have to feel we will be united in the life after this Earth.

This sums up very well how I feel, it's always very difficult to say goodbye, but when compared with the lifetime of unconditional love, it's nearly inconsequential. When my time comes there's a lot of great dogs waiting for me.

We love our Westies. In the foreground is 6 month old Finnegan, aka Finn, with Big Sis Luna, 10 y.o. behind him. Out of the frame is my wife in the bathroom. They were waiting for her to get ready to go with us for their walk. Finn has some very big paws to fill. We lost our first westie Sammy, in February. He was just this unflappable, confident, devil may care and outgoing little guy absolutely loved by everyone in our neighborhood. After he passed, Luna just wasn't the same dog. Still sweet and affectionate but we could see that she missed her big brother. We'd often find her lying on his bed or in one of his favorite spots. When we found out our breeder was still around, we contacted him and found out he had a litter going home in September. Hemmed and hawed a little but we went to meet Finn and his brother as we wanted another boy. Luna came with us to meet them. She was kind of annoyed at first but would soon play with them. Long story short, we brought him home in September and Luna has her joy back. They play with each other all the time. And as it turns out, Finn is from Sammy's bloodline. Sometimes he's so much like Sam it hurts. Sleeping beside me in my office right now just like Sammy did.
