Pit bull mixed got our Golden retriever today.

I asked our veterinarian about this and he said that the pure breed dogs seem to have more health issues than a heinz 57 dogs. I've had both and the pure breed ones always had more problems.

I love dogs and I've had so many different breeds chows, dobermans, malamutes, Rottweiler mix, siberians, American pit , you get the idea. They all can be great ! the kids used to literally ride my chow around or drag it by its ears never a problem. But Other animals on the property that wasn't happening cuda was his name and eventually I had to have input down it broke my heart. Once a dog shows a high level aggression or attacks an animal or person it can really never be trusted. It's nothing personal against the dog it's just in their nature when that switch flips it's on. The thing is some dogs are very proficient at fighting. You ever seen a child bit in the face by a Doberman Pinscher I have 100 stitches later in about 2 seconds what a mess. It wasn't my dog it was one my mother was trying to rehabilitate that taught me a lifetime lesson. I had to pull an 80 lb pit off one of my dogs it took everything I had and I'm lucky the dog didn't turn on me. I was young and in shape and fell to the ground exhausted after that. You don't mess with a pit that is gone sideways they can be a killing machine.

I've had many pits over the years. I put one down when she started getting aggressive. She nipped a local kid, nothing bad.
But when pits get "weird" it's time to make tough decisions. It could very well happen again. Sorry.

The bottom line on this is, if a dog has teeth, it could bite at any time. Any dog. Cats, too. That's why I always have in the back of my mind an escape plan even when handling our cats. They are animals, after all. It's a dangerous thing to have the attitude "my animal would never hurt anyone" because the fact is, they could.

I agree

Discussing whether pitbulls (or any other breed of dog) is dangerous or not is like discussing politics. There is no winner. Agreeing to disagree may be the best route at this point. I hope the OP and dog are doing OK.

I took in my sister's dog when she was going through a tough time in life and had to enter rehab after a divorce. The dog already had a bad attitude when I I got and it had bitten my sister several times. That dog was just a asshole, sorry. I did my best to turn it around but no dice. It got to the point where I had to wear leather gloves when I wanted to make the dog go into a room when the doorbell rang...Then it bit my 20 year old daughter pretty bad for no reason and she had to get stitches. That was it. I gave the dog a bath and a haircut so he looked nice and I took him and went & picked up my sister and drove them both to the shelter where we had him put down.
It was a terribly hard thing for me to make her do but she understood in the end because she was unable to care for the dog anymore. She loved him. I tried hard to find a shelter that would take the dog but nobody would because he was biter, and I wasn't going to try to hide that fact. My sister is doing great now and we have a good relationship despite all that went down. I love dogs but some are just wired wrong.

I cannot understand why that vicious breed is not eradicated. There are plenty of good breeds to choose from.....

I can't understand why you Australians gave up your guns so easily.
"They" aren't all vicious. A person with common sense knows that. Statements like yours do you no good. It makes you look ignorant.

I cannot believe someone wrote this and I also can't believe someone else gave it a thumbs up. Eradicate them? OMG, I think it's best that I leave this thread. Good luck everyone.

My daughters Pit mix dove on our golden . I could not get her off. She was like an alligator. Latched on Dori's neck and twisted back and forth so fast. Once I got a hold of its collar .I tried dragging her off and I just drug both dogs away together.

I twisted the collar and pulled she turned and latched onto my arm. I started punching her in the head while my legs were wrapped around her. Kitchen chairs were flying, Table was moved against the fridge with me and the dog under it. Grand kids screaming , Wife screaming.

It took everything I had not to shoot that dog in front of the kids. I never thought that dog would turn like that for no reason . No wonder that breed gets a bad rap.

Now I am hurting pretty bad and for what. Taking in a Rat bastard that should have got put down. A very docile dog that turned monster for no reason. The 11 month old golden was just sitting next to me with its head on my lap. Man I am hurting, Todds coming over to help ship some parts.

I pity Dori. Paw bit and swelled , Neck ripped up laying here shaking.
