Pit bull mixed got our Golden retriever today.

Sorry I left out the most important part. Poke a screw driver, anything under the collar and start twisting. The monsters eyes roll back and it will let go but you do not let go until you feel safe to.
My theory in that situation is the same in case of a human attack. A thumb into the brain thru the eye. As hard as possible.
Assuming a firearm is not readily available.

Get treatment for your wounds, and your Goldens'. Report the dog attack by a pit. Animal control will come and get the dog, and put it down. Neither you nor your daughter will have to do it, the law will take care of it (whether your daughter wants it or not).
That dog does not spend two more minutes in the vicinity of your grandkids, period.

I must agree. Once it has bit a human,,, it's got to go.

My friend, the 75 year old, caused his attack. He waved hello to the owner from across the street.
The pit mixes were unleashed in her garage with an open garage door.
I'm betting he never does that again... What was he thinking???

I heard a disturbance in front of my house. I ran outside and found my across the street neighbors two pit bull mixes trying to kill my 75 year old next door neighbor in my driveway.
The owner was dancing around, trying to pull them off, getting nowhere.
I ran back in the house, got my 38, shot and killed one of the pits, the other one ran. I then called 911.

Police, animal control , showed up, and an ambulance took my friend to the hospital. Four news helicopters showed up (we had been having several local stories of dog attacks in socal at the time, including a killing of a very young girl).
The police and animal control thanked me, said I may have saved his life.
The owner complained I didn't have to shoot her dog.

My girlfriend likes pits, wanted one bad. I told her a pit was a deal breaker, relationship would be over.
We now have three wonderful, but noisy, German shepherds.

Your daughter's dog would have been dead before I left the room.
You didn't shoot the owner !

Steve ---

Really sorry to learn that you and your puppy had to deal with this Pit.

I had a very similar incident with my youngest son's Pit mixed breed. My oldest son had to pull the pit off a German Shepherd and in that process my son's wrist and arm was badly damaged. We were contacted by Animal Control to take measures to stop the Pit from attacking anyone in the future. Even with those measures, the Pit had one opportunity to attack another dog about 2 years later, and after that attack we had to turn the Pit over to Animal Control.

Lots of good recommendations in this thread - do what you believe is the right move.

But don't let that Pit around the small children at this point - the potential for attack due to the unpredictable nature of the Pit is real.

Take care of yourself and the puppy as soon as possible.

Sorry to read this, I hope you and your pup heal up quickly. Your daughter‘s dog has shown its true colors, it needs to be put down.

My daughters Pit mix dove on our golden . I could not get her off. She was like an alligator. Latched on Dori's neck and twisted back and forth so fast. Once I got a hold of its collar .I tried dragging her off and I just drug both dogs away together.

I twisted the collar and pulled she turned and latched onto my arm. I started punching her in the head while my legs were wrapped around her. Kitchen chairs were flying, Table was moved against the fridge with me and the dog under it. Grand kids screaming , Wife screaming.

It took everything I had not to shoot that dog in front of the kids. I never thought that dog would turn like that for no reason . No wonder that breed gets a bad rap.

Now I am hurting pretty bad and for what. Taking in a Rat bastard that should have got put down. A very docile dog that turned monster for no reason. The 11 month old golden was just sitting next to me with its head on my lap. Man I am hurting, Todds coming over to help ship some parts.

I pity Dori. Paw bit and swelled , Neck ripped up laying here shaking.

Steve, I sure am sorry. I just shake my head every time I hear os see someone defending those dogs. They are bad news. Hope your pup heals up good.

Pit's are nice until they aren't. This one tore up your pup. Good thing it wasn't a grandkid.
Preach it, brother. It could have. Thing is, it wouldda made no difference to the pit WHAT or WHO it attacked.

My sympathies. I don't like pits. I just don't trust them. Lordi, sounds like a really tough time.

I'm sorry for not being clear. It was sarcasm. My friend did NOTHING to cause the attack, he mearly waved hello to the woman across the street, and her dogs attacked.
Ah, my sarcasm detector was offline.

It's infuriating the the dogs were mauling an innocent person, yet the owner squawked about the dog being shot. He should have sued her back into reality.

She did threaten to sue me. My friend, the victim, threatened to counter-sue. That was the end of that.

My brother in law was attacked by 3 pit bulls, they darn near killed him. I wouldn't worry about what the daughter would think, I would've taken care of it, it could be a person next time

Here's my Pit Story
The neighbor on my street Pitt's
One house between us. We are on 50x100 lots.
Her 2 got out. One is meaner than junk yard dog but keeps um in her rear yard. Did not inform her home owner's insurance.
They don't cover them anyway but will drop you to keep from being sued. She illegally rents rooms.
He dogs get out. My wife is pushed onto a corner. I get dogs attention, my wife gets away. I fend off dog.
If I could have gotten a clean shot without endangering anyone I would have. All this talk about shooting, just remember only do so if safe. You do not want bullets flying just anywhere.
We were both able to get away and police called.
He shows up says I am here don't see a dog come out unarmed and we will make a report so documented.
I put gun on table and go out. Jumped by hiding dog. Cop jumps in car leaves me now unarmed to fend off dog. He sees I am back inside safe as only a few steps to get back inside. It almost got me.
The cop calls on phone says this is not my problem.
It is animal controls, calls them. Guy calls says he will not come without police backup. He calls again later to say he is on way back as cops coming too.
Tells me dog attacked some kid just pants torn and another neighbor one street over also attacked but got away. Walks but carrys a large stick bat who saved kid.
Fast forward now cop there and dog catcher. Can't find dog. Lady owner not home and Noone there speaks English.
I and others told if dog or owner shows up call back.
So violent dig just out roaming.
Owner shows, and I call.
They come back, she pretends to not understand what problem is. They tell her she must go out and find her dog before it harms anyone. She says it is a good dog and it will show up when tired and hungry.
They now tell her she is going to be charged / liable if someone is hurt since she is now negligent! She will not even go to try locate dog.
They pulled me aside and said we know you and your wife both carry, make sure if you take the dog out you hit the dog and nothing else.
The dog did show up and not bite anyone we know about but gas blood on it I was told. No telling what it was from. No one reported a bite.
Was told she got a warning and told she must inform her homeowners and keep dog locked up.
She has dog another 6_9 months. And was seen out a few more times before it disappeared.
I have no idea what/where/how.
