440 bored.030
bone stock 452 heads
TRW 2355 six pack pistons, 2.062 comp height, around 9.5:1
MP 284/484 cam advanced 4 degrees
street dominator intake
race prepped TQ by demonsizzler
1 7/8 fenderwell headers
2800 stall convertor, 3.23 suregrip.

This is just a fun street car and
It does decent but i want more out of it. Trick flows would be nice but just not in the budget. Was thinking if speedmaster had a good black friday sale, that i might get a set of their aluminum heads and wondering if if they would produce a noticeable difference? I would not be porting them, just using them as they come after the machine shop checks them out..Not sure how much better they will flow over stocks or any of that and hoping someone would know., and also wondering if they will even work with my pistons because the stock 452 are 88cc and i believe the speedmasters are only 74cc,,wich would jack up compression a good bit. This thing already pings if the timing advances too quick..still dialing that in..

Can't tell you a thing about the speedmaster heads. I can tell you I have 440 sources,Edelbrock, and trick flow heads and they are all an improvement over the stock Mopar castings.

Figure out what your budget is and go from there. A black Friday sale may get you in the door but I would at least have a competent shop check the heads out and make sure the decks are flat as well. You can always run a thicker head gasket if needed for compression issues.

speedmasters have the intake ports raised like the Victors... just a FYI

ah crap, didnt know that. So what heads would use all the factory stuff in the factory locations and all, and straight plugs and all? Thanks

Also know that anytime that you change something like this, that after market parts, don't always fit correctly. It can be from re grinding the valves and seats, valve springs, head deck possibly off, pushrods/rocker arms and intake will not fit properly. Not trying to scare you off, but it has happened to to me 2 out of 3 engines. The one that didn't bite me was a stock 318. Just saying, keep an open mind.
Good luck with your choices!

When I put stealth heads on my 400 I had to cut valve reliefs in the pistons. Fortunately the pistons were thick enough it wasn't a problem.
I had 452's before.

Anything that I’m aware of, that’s currently produced as a “replacement/performance” head for a BBM, should be a noticeable improvement over an unmodified factory head.
I will probably go with the 440 source heads. Im just unsure if they will work with my pistons as the stock 452 are 88cc open chamber heads and the stealths are 80cc..not sure if these will be even more apt to cause ping than what i got now..The pistons are the TRW 2355 six pack pistons with a 2.062 height..I hope they will as i REALLY have been wanting to upgrade heads for a few years!

Summit Racing has a sale going on, you can save $120 off each Trick Flow head.

Code EARLYP
How do you use that to get 120.00 off EACH head? also, i noticed summit has 1 more set of e-street heads..i could use the coupon for them also,,wonder if they would do as good as the 440 source stealths?

Still cant really swing the Trickflows, but they do have the e-street edelbrocks..will the 120 off work on those? they come as a pair so could only use the coupon once unfortunately

Yes, it would work, but you’re right only on the pair.

Which of the three did you like most, and why?

They all serve their purpose. The Trick Flow on my 505 and made over 600hp with a hyd roller cam so what is not to like!?

The source are cnc ported and even though I bought them second hand they really woke up an 8.5-1 440 with a comp XE274 hyd cam.

I have had edlebrocks before and they were an improvement over ported iron heads. The set I have now is cnc ported and bought second hand in need of repair. I look forward to running them once one chamber is fixed and new valves installed.

Trick Flow were awesome out of the box and needed nothing.

The source needed the valve guides touched up but have been great otherwise.

I would take my (MCH) cnc source over a stock Edelbrock.

Not much of a difference there below .550. Mine were done by MCH before Jeff passed years ago. I hope they flow better than those!

Those numbers go up pretty good with valve job and bowl blend.

The flow was better when Jeff was doing them.
I’ve only had one of those here…..years ago.
I wanna say the big number was like 312 on my bench.

The step in between ootb and cnc is……..ootb, but with the seats redone, a small back cut on the intake valve, and the bowls blended, which yields:

28” test pressure, 4.375” bore-

Lift——— I/E
.100——72/57
.200—-147/118
.300—-212/142
.400—-250/173
.500—-273/195
.550—-278/204
.600—-279/207
.650—-278/215

Looking at these numbers, and I’d have to find results from other heads to confirm, but the exhaust looks a little above avg for that level of work(going from memory).

Edit- checking back thru my notes, looks like the intake flow often gets in the 280-283cfm range, and the exhaust is usually more like 200-205.

Whittling down the intake guide boss and opening up/smoothing over the pinch to 1.125” will get about another 10cfm(290-ish).

DANG!! The speedmaster are on sale today for 915.00 for the set! I would jump on them right now but the combustion chamber is only 74cc so i am unsure if it would be too much compression for pump gas with my setup or not..
