Help on 318 purchase - Newbie mechanic questions.

-
Inspect it first. It may not need pistons or boring. If it was maintained well, the bores could be in good enough shape to simply re-ring.

I think what I will do if I get it is to start a new thread.

As I tear it down I will take detailed pictures of everything and ask questions. That way with the help of the more knowledgable I can determine what would be the best kit to purchase.

Looking for YouTube vids now on tearing down an engine. I have the Mopar small block motor book and I am using "Auto Fundamentals" Text Book by Martin Stockel as my foundation for learning mechanics. It is a really great text book for getting basics down. But diagrams are a poor substitute to the real thing so for the engine I thought tearing a real one down and putting it back together was the best way to learn.

Your suggestion of not building it at first but simply take apart put back together repeatedly is a good one.

That sounds like a plan. If you get hung up on anything, PM me. I will be glad to talk you through something on the phone.

Eh.....is there anything that can kill me doing this? Any loss of finger or pain thingies I have to worry about? QUOTE]

The first thing that comes to mind is how well the engine is attached to the stand.
There are devils hidden in those small details. Good luck

Lol! I hear you.

I have (and had) a couple engines so I am kind of comfortable attaching engines to stands. Though I really hate my remaining stand which is one of those 750 lbs tripod stand that only has a single wheel in the front. Kind of flimsy feeling.

What does a 318 weigh? About 550?

The only other stand local to me for purchase are these: Are these any good?

My 392 is on custom stand.

So you did get the 392. That's really cool.

Yes I did. I posted a second thread that was filled with pictures and info. The engine checked out as claimed. Unfortunately that thread was listed the same day the forum was hacked so the update thread about purchasing it is lost.

The 392 is really the reason for this little project. Rather learn on a $200 experiment than risk the 392.

Thanks for the offer to help. I will take you up on it. Just waiting to find out from seller if engine is still available.

I have a complete 360 sitting on one of those in my garage, I move it around too. No problems here, just don't get ballistic with it and it should be fine.

If your torquing a bolt on the stand, pull up on the wrench so you are "lifting" the motor, that way you are not putting 100 lbs more weight on the stand, especially at the end. A carbide scribe pen can be used to mark the caps and rods and any other thing or position that can be fudged when you are putting it back together. Dont use a sharpie, those marks disappear under solvent.

Wow. Cool. Thank you. I didn't think about torque position.

You would have when it landed on your foot. lol

Remember...your role here is to " make John not die "! Lol

Engine is still available so sent message to see if I can look at it today or tomorrow. Will update shortly.

A big thanks to all.
