I'm close to bring back the intake manifold on my 1965 273 engine but then I started wondering; was the short ends of theintake manifold gaskets made of cork or the robber foam stuff?

If it was cork, does anyone have a set for sale?

What I find works best, is to leave the end seals off, and put on a thick narrow bead of silicone sealer. Make sure the block and manifold are oil free.

Thanks for the quick reply! I want the engine 100% factory correct so that's why I'm wondering about the cork or rubber foam gasket.

The best sealing will come from using silicone sealant at each end but sounds like you want to be able to "see" the gaskets. Back in 65 I would assume they only used cork then later down the road came rubber gaskets. So cork is my final answer. lol

I think you are pretty right on that one. I have checked the two unrestored 65s I've got and you can actually see some of the gasket and it looks like cork.

So does anyone out here on FABO have a set of these cork gaskets????

I know that your trying to make the car perfect, but, even not 100% perfect,
they are a very nice car.

How about not worrying about the stuff nobody can see, and drive the car. :)

Do you have some photos of the car to share with us.?

The end gaskets were cork from the factory on every 64 or 65 273 I ever worked on. There were several times I used something else so I may have a set of the cork ones in the garage. I'll dig around and let you know.

Hi! Which plant did you work on? My car was assembled at the LA plant in January of 1965. I'm trying to recreate a DartCharger as it was when it left the factory!

Here is pictures on how it looked when I bought it from San Fransisco and how it looks now!

You can follow the restoration at this forum;

He is doing a 100% nut and bolt restoration on the car. He has been working on it for a long time.

I did not work at a plant. Just did a quite a bit of mechanic work starting in 1970 or so. Most of the engines I worked on at the time had never been apart and when I took intakes off I found the end gaskets to be cork. I did look in the garage and found an old gasket set for a 273 with the metal intake gaskets and cork ends. It appears that you have found the metal side gaskets so I'll send you a PM on the end gaskets.

Yup....cork. The last set I was able to find that looked like the original Mopar ones was a set from Victor. Been a few years though..........
