Yup, folks. "self driving," and burn baby burn, all that great big powerful battery is tough to put out

Two people killed in fiery Tesla crash with no one driving

Authorities in Texas say two people were killed when a Tesla with no one in the driver’s seat crashed into a tree and burst into flames, Houston television station KPRC 2 reported.

The cause of the crash, which happened at about 9PM local time in Spring, Texas (near Houston), is under investigation. According to KHOU in Houston, first responders had to use 30,000 gallons of water over four hours to put out the fire, as the Tesla’s battery kept reigniting. Authorities tried to contact Tesla for advice on putting out the fire; it’s not clear whether they received any response.

Preliminary reports suggest the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to make a turn, then drove off the road into a tree. One of the men killed was in the front passenger seat of the car, the other was in the back seat, according to KHOU. Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman told KPRC that “no one was driving” the fully-electric 2019 Tesla at the time of the crash. It’s not yet clear whether the car had its Autopilot driver assist system activated.

Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment on Sunday. The company dissolved its press office and doesn’t usually respond to media inquiries, however.

Can you imagine what WILL happen when one of these crashes into a gas station or "paint store?"

"Tesla’s guidance suggests it’s better to let the fire burn out than continuing to try to put it out."

We don't need NO DAMN "Autopilot driver assist system"....................we're smart enough to crash a car without any help from a damn computer!!!!

The problem is the battery is an oxidizer. They can and will burn full submerged.

Every vehicle fire has its issues and challenges. Fuel pouring out of a full gas tank can be really difficult to extinguish as well. And remember magnesium wheels and engine blocks? Yeah they react with water, not easy to put those out either.

Self driving vehicles are already safer per mile driven than the “average” driver. Of course none of us consider ourselves “average”, but there it is. They will never be accident or fatality free, no system is perfect. But people speed and stack their crap up all by themselves - all the time.

Not sure why they would use water on an electrical fire.

This is what we've been talking about. Most depts are unprepared for these obnoxious types of fires. Who knows, maybe they need aircraft / shipboard foam, etc You don't just extinguish these batteries

Or maybe a "peaceful protest" lol

Probably is true in the last 20 years - all the texting going on while driving.

Well at least the onboard car computer could text you as you drive (or not drive) and let you know that you're about to experience a sudden stop!!:rofl::rofl::rofl::soapbox::steering::steering::steering:

As a F/F, we have been drilling on battery powered cars since the advent of the Prius. What dept are not prepared for is a self driving battery car. I don’t thing there is such a training available for that. Car fuel fires are nothing compared to these massive batteries. Even magnesium fire can be fought with class D powders. Most dept are just not prepared to deal with this type of fire. Depts including ours use to use a AFFF fire foam on these. But alas Morgan and Morgan has found a way to sue these manufacturers and there is no more AFFF foam. There are effective fire suppressants out there but they are expensive.

What happens when one of these cars catches fire at a nuclear plant or an explosives factory???

What is amazing to me is these planet saving battery cars are being recharged by nuclear or a coal burning plant. And what these brilliant inventors have not solved is the length of time it takes
To fill these batteries up.

Lithium can react violently with water. Not a good idea to extinguish a fire involving a lithium battery

Every time I see one of those autonomous Taxis in Phx when I visit the brats, I give it a WIDE berth and prepare to dodge the carnage :steering:

On my way home last night 3 times in a 3 mile drive by the naches river I had to swerve a bit from idiots talking on the phone , texting & a person looking at the passenger to talk to them...that 1 gets me pissed. You dont need to look at your passenger to talk to them.
