How big of a 4 barrel on a stock 1970 318?

Your right im not nor do i claim to be a professional carb tuner. Can i do the basics? Sure. Thats exactly why i run a edelbrock carb, set it and forget it. Mine acts the same weather its 95 and humid out or 30 and dry.

Im not bad mouthing holley, they are ideal for a drag car that requires constant adjustmemts and tuning. I just think as drivability goes for a street car you cant beat a edelbrock. Ive learned about holley’s notorious constant adjusting problems from many of the old timers including my dad. Not bashing holley, just between the two the eddy is more street car and operator friendly

Do tell.. I've been running nothing but Holley and Holley type carbs ie'Quickfuel for a while once adjusted correctly they'll outperform anything out there..but you need to KNOW what your doing..keywood KNOW!!!
 
I have thrown a Holley 600 1850 out of the box new on several cars and ran for years without readjusting. When people play with them is when the troubles start.

Know what you're doing? Oh, you mean like when you used a stock intermediate shaft with an HV oil pump. Yeah that kinda know. I get it now.

340strokes is a subcontractor. He makes good money and has nice stuff and let's other people get greasy and dirty. I'd be highly shocked to find out that he's doing any more than talking about adjusting a carburetor and probably doesn't know a jet screw from a idle screw.
And to the original poster just so you know who to listen to watch how many people agree with me....
 
carbs tested by a smart guy-Jeff Smith-and like we have said before-an engine does not care what brand carb it has-as long as it is the right size and properly jetted="all carbs performed virtually the same at wide open throttle over the entire curve"!

Got me on that one. I have no idea what a jet screw is. And I'm old.
 

OP made a great choice, 650 thunder will serve him well.
That being said, I disagree about Holleys not being reliable on the street.......
I ran Holley's for years and years without issues. I had to replace (2) 600 eddys on one of my Dusters to get rid of a "bog" when flooring it out of the hole because this Duster challenges carbs. Why? Home-ported heads, bigger than stock cam and..... 2.76 gears/stock converter. How did I fix it?
old 670 Holley Street Avenger I pieced together.......

Please don't make me post a video of two Edelbrock 600's at work!
Sounds like a simple accelerator pump plug problem if you had a bug.
If the Chevy guys kept giving me Holley's I'd probably just make those work, but they keep giving me Edelbrocks so I make those work. It really don't matter which one the original poster gets. I would say get the best deal on a used one and rebuild it and learn something about it either way. By the way has original poster came back to this thread? LOL
 
I had a little old allis chalmers tractor that had what could be called a jet screw, it was like an idle mixture screw that adjusted the main mixture. but 340stroker ace and jpar probably not

Maybe I have a terminology problem? The screw that the throttle Hammer comes down on I call and idle screw. I called those two screws on the lower front of an Edelbrock jet screws because they're Idle Jet screws to me at any rate. And of course I know how to adjust both of them on both carburetors.

I finally just got to the couch!
 
I never said they werent good on the street, the holley’s just tend to be pickier than the edelbrocks and for that reason i believe the edelbrock is a less maintenance and more operator friendly carb.
 
I'll go along with 71DodgeDemon340 on this. Worked with stock street engines and had constant fiddly issues with Holleys. In particular was a '69 Super Bee stock 383 4 speed. Played with power valve springs/jetting/ vacuum secondaries /etc. Got fed up bolted an Edelbrock on. Adjusted idle mixture and idle speed and starting driving. Definite seat of pants increase in throttle response and h.p. Never did any more adjustments; year round driving.

Holleys are great at the strip. You can do anything you want to those carbs. while still bolted to the intake and very quickly too. Well thought out design for competition engines.
Is my experience the "end all" observation? NO
Could a lack of knowledge and experience influence my outcome? YES
One final thought that turned me completely away from Holleys for street engines. I was working on a 302 / 4bbl (Motorcraft) truck. The truck had run fine for many many miles. Owner wanted a little more performance and wanted a Holley. I bolted on the Holley and started the engine. I revved the engine to about 1500 rpm (no air cleaner was going to set mixture etc. ) The thing backfired and blew the choke plate out (plastic choke shaft) and hit me in the forehead. Was that incident caused by my ignorance? More than likely. But I sure didn't like being reminded of my ignorance getting beaned by flying carburetor parts.

it's ok, and it's fine, it's your opinion. And Holleys are "pickier" because you've experienced a few, I suppose? You made your opinion off of what appears to be hear-says, I make my opinion off of experience. I've owned multiple of each, and I just said that I've been running Holley's for years and years, rain, snow or shine, no issues. And NOPE! I didn't tune weekly, or monthly, or....... are u ready? or even yearly.
But I have no problem with somebody preferring eddys, or holleys, or carters. Pick and choose your own, and pick for whatever reason you wish :)

All my experience is with edelbrocks and have never had a issue.
No expirience with holley but if there is a bunch of people having the same issues or saying the same things its kinda hard to ignore it. Im sure there are plenty of holleys that get bolted up and run fine but i dont think i have ever heard of a edelbrock not working 100% out of the box unless there was a factory defect.

Edelbrocks, Carters are a whole lot more forgiving than Holleys on street cars. That is my 62 years worth of dealing and using both. Am I allowed to enter my 2 cents?
