I was wondering with aluminum intake, heads and water pump and headers etc... on a 400/451 stroked iron block what would the weight be and would it be less than my 273 in my 65 Cuda?

Dont know what a 273 weighs but you can get a B block engine down to around 520lbs with aluminum components.

Not bad for a big block-isn't that about the same as an iron-headed 360?

I've looked on the web and 525 seems to be the number for 273/318/340 but for 360 they say 550 which I don't get, I'm having a moment of weakness and thinking of going 451-470 instead of a built 273 and since they would be the same weight they should handle similar.

The big block can be weighted down to approx. a small block weight. Real close. The listed weights are general. Unless someone finds a certified scale.......

The 360 has a larger stroke, bigger crank throws, 3.31 vs 3.58. The mains are bigger too, all that adds up!

I know those weights are only a ballpark numbers but 360 don't weigh 25lb more than a 340. 360 has lighter piston that a 340 and cast cranks are lighter than forged ones so I'm guessing 340/360 cranks are similar in weight even with the extra stroke.

IDK which is heavier between vast and forged, but the 360 crank is a good bit larger than a 318 crank. Can't miss it. Piston difference is minor at most. Truly peanuts in weight. Considering the overall weight of it all.

Weigh them up and know for sure instead of claiming to know by picking th up or looking at them or think about there construction.

One I thought that could make the difference if those weights came from early 70's the 360 block had 340 water jackets but only bored to 4" instead of 4.04" don't know how much 0.04" of metal weighs but I'm sure it adds to the difference.
